[opensuse] no WLAN with ipw2100
If i do 'iwlist eth1 scanning' I get 17 access points listed. All have in common that reported 'Quality' is at least 16 but 'Signal' level is zero, e.g like this: Cell 11 - Address: 00:1C:4A:D3:86:88 ESSID:"MyWlan" Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg Mode:Master Frequency:2.412 GHz (Channel 1) Encryption key:on Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s 11 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Quality:90 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 IE: WPA Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : CCMP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK Extra: Last beacon: 468ms ago Of course no connection neither with NetworkManager nor with traditional iwconfig/ifup is possible. NetworkManger even does not show me the access points. Is the ipw2100 driver broken? Does anyone have this problem with other WLAN hardware? With openSUSE-11.1 WLAN did work almost perfect. Starting witn openSUSE-11.2 it was no longer possible to associate to an AP while NetworkManager was still showing them all. I'm using the iwlagn driver on my laptop. While I normally do not have trouble with it, during my last vacation I could not connect to the WLAN of the hotel I was staying in. I could see the network, but not connect to it, until I also entered the MAC address of the access point in my config (using traditional ifup). If desperate, you might try that, too. Thanks for your suggestion, but doing iwconfig eth1 ap <MAC address> has no effect (interface remains unassociated). To me it looks like the ipw2100 driver is not fully ported to the current kernel network infrastructure and thus just broken. The driver is still able to scan access points but nothing more. iwlist eth1 scan |grep Quality gives me Quality:79 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:16 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:35 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:33 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:61 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:20 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:39 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:16 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:31 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:93 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:18 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:16 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:18 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Quality:23 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

With refresh=off zypper won't get any new info on updated packages. And I hope you use the main Factory repo as well because without the KDE from that repo the rxtra for Factory does not make sense. I think I picked this KDE Extras repo by searching for rekonq on software.opensuse.org. I used the default filter "openSUSE 11.3" but nevertheless the search result lists rekonq from this "KDE:Extra/openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory" repo first. I just clicked it and this was a mistake. And other people will follow. Thus software search needs tweaking. Hi Stefan, I use an IBM Thinkpad R50 with Centrino chipset and have the same problem. My WLAN card worked fine with 11.2, and refuses to connect with 11.3. Signal is available (4 APs are shown), but no connection. At boot time, I get the warning that the hardware does not support WPA2 and therefore the connection can't be stablished. Strange that the hardware was able to cope with WPA2 in openSUSE 11.2. On http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Ipw2100 it is reported that the firmware may crash in newer kernel versions. But in kernel 2.6.9 everything was well... Strange that the hardware was able to cope with WPA2 in openSUSE 11.2. Meanwhile I found out that iwlist reporting zero signal level and link quality greater then zero is just wrong but common and not relevant. The ipw2100 driver is able to connect despite that.
It turned out that in my case there is a confusion regarding RFKILL state, see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14098 (start at comment #14) Right now it looks to mee ike that mostly (or maybe exclusively) dell notebooks are affected. In fact there was an rfkill suspen/resume related patch in thinkpad-acpi in kernel 2.6.31.9, see http://lwn.net/Articles/367445 thus this should be fixed. Is your driver ipw2200 or something else? If you see an error 132 when wpa_supplicant is executed then you have the same issue then me (in my case this does not get logged to /var/log/messages). rfkill attributes seem to be set correctly. "rfkill list all" shows that the interface (phy0) is not locked. Unlike your case, my WLAN worked fine with openSUSE 11.2.
In fact there was an rfkill suspen/resume related patch in thinkpad-acpi in kernel 2.6.31.9, see http://lwn.net/Articles/367445 thus this should be fixed. Is your driver ipw2200 or something else?
Yes, my driver is ipw2200. lsmod | grep ipw ipw2200 183086 0 libipw 41980 1 ipw2200 cfg80211 155663 2 libipw,ipw2200 lib80211 5462 2 libipw,ipw2200
If you see an error 132 when wpa_supplicant is executed then you have the same issue then me (in my case this does not get logged to /var/log/messages).
When starting wpa_supplicant, I have 2 possiblities: First I tried driver nl80211 because of the 80211 entries in lsmod: wpa_supplicant -Dnl80211 -ieth1 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf nl80211: Driver does not support authentication/association or connect commands Failed to initialize driver interface ELOOP: remaining socket: socket=4 eloop_data=0x80f6928 user_data=0x80f6640 handler=0x80b7800 and I'm back at the command line. Then I tried the generic driver: wpa_supplicant -Dwext (and the rest of the command line as above): ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument and I do not return to command line. The "ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument" is what I remeber from openSUSE 11.2.
In this case the rfkill command (package rfkill) will help, see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=530264
I do not see an error 132.

I tried it and I got a network connection all right. Many thanks to Helmut Schaa, who wrote this page :-) First step was iwlist eth1 scan My WLAN ESSID showed up (as strongest of the 6 cells shown), so I issued iwconfig eth1 essid FEUER but iwconfig did not show an address for the AP, even after a minute. So I set the AP's address manually (iwconfig eth1 ap xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx) and then both ESSID and AP address were shown. Since I use WPA-PSK, I continued with editing /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf, so that it now contains the text mentioned on the page. Next I started wpa_supplicant as suggested with wpa_supplicant -Dwext -ieth1 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf - -dddt and saw a lot of text running over the screen - but I found no error. Hm. I tried "dhcpcd eth1" - and ifconfig shows an address! And I can ping that address from another machine. Great. But why the heck didn't that work from installation on? I first did an update install from 11.2 to 11.3, and the connection did not work. I thought "ah, an old config mashed it up" an did a new install including the creation of an ext4 filesystem instead of the old ext3 one. But still it did not work. Though I entered all data during the install process, wpa_supplicant.conf had only two lines: ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant ctrl_interface_group=wheel Nothing of the ESSID, nothing of the key. Is this expected behaviour? And will I have to run those steps manually any time that I want to connect via WLAN now?
