Re: [SLE] How to share a printer with linux
Hi, I did everything you told me and I can't print from computer that is running XP. I tried using a computer with windows 98 and it works. Is there a way to make computer running XP to print to a linux computer? Or what I am doing wrong Jose LinuxWorld999 wrote: On Friday 18 April 2003 02:46, Jose Sanchez wrote:
Hi, I thinks that is what I am missing, because now I can see the printer in Windows XP but when I send the print command nothing happends, and I have cups installed. What should I change there and where is this cupsd.conf file located?
Jose
<snip> The file is located in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf. I have attached my sample file with this email. Load it into kwrite and search for "192.168". This should bring you the only line ammded in the stantard cupsd.conf file. Change the line "allow from 192.168.0.*" in <location> tags to match your network address. Restart cups and samba and 30 seconds later the printer should be visible on the network. LW999

How do I do that, were should I set the windows XP users in samba and in linux. Jose LinuxWorld999 wrote:

Jose - add the users to the Linux system in the usual way - in the YaST Control Center under "Security and Users" and be sure to assign them passwords (the same ones that Windows uses!) Then, open a Konsole (assuming you are using KDE) and su to root. Run smbadduser and add those users. Then run smbpasswd and assign the passwords. Now the XP users will be recognized by the Linux system when they request services. One gotcha to be aware of: Windows allows capital letters and spaces in usernames and this won't work in Linux. For instance, my son's Win98 account was Shadow Devil - yeah I know it's funny, but he's only 10 and he thinks it's cool ;-) - and I needed to change the Windows account to shadowdevil so both systems would be happy. I'm no samba expert by any stretch and there may be a quicker and easier way to do this, but this is how I set things up and I can share files between 2 Win98, 1 WinXP Pro, and 1 Win2K pro boxen. Hi Mark, I think I will need a little more assistance because I am a complete ignorant in this stuff. I runned smbadduser but it says I have to put unixid:netid, so I putted unixid jose which is the same user in Windows XP and my linux box, but what is the netid or where should I get that. The password I putted is the same that in Windows XP. But it didn't work, I think because, the netid I putted was something I invented in that moment. thanks, for the advice and I hope you could still help me. Jose Malke Routh wrote:

Jose - Smbadduser is asking you to tell it what the Linux username is that is linked to the Windows username, like this: smbadduser jose:jose Both user accounts need to exist identically on both systems. Then you'll be able to: smbpasswd jose (you'll get the prompt to enter the password twice) and then smbpasswd will tell you it added the password successfully. <snip> In SuSE, enable "SWAT". This enables Samba to be managed using SWAT. Once SWAT is running, pint the browser to http://localhost:601 or http://localhost:601. I cannot remember which one at the moment. Under the passwords tab, setup the XP users with same user id and password as in windows. Using YAST2, set the users in Linux as well. Restart Samba and hopefully the XP users should have access. For a good guide to using Samba, there is a free book available on O'Reilly's site called "Using Samba". Although this book can be purchased, it is avable for free on the internet. Point your browser to http://www.oreilly.com/openbook/. There are other Linux books available as well if anyone is interested. The other books are listed below in case anyone is interested. a.. DocBook: The Definitive Guide a.. Embedding Perl in HTML with Mason a.. Free as in Freedom a.. Learning Debian/GNU Linux a.. Linux Device Drivers, 2nd Edition a.. Linux Network Administrator's Guide, 2nd Edition a.. MySQL Reference Manual a.. OpenSources: Voices from the Open Source Revolution a.. Using Samba a.. Volume 6B: Motif Reference Manual, 2nd Edition
