Hi all, I'm having a bit of a strange problem. I've got a clean install of 7.2; all I've done so far really is set up leafnode and sendmail and recompiled pine. I don't _think_ I've touched any KDE configuration files, but maybe I did something without realising it. The problem is that when I use KDE as root, if I try to start a KDE application (e.g. kmail or konqueror), that application just hangs. I get the frame window up for it (and kmail says it's "initializing"), but they go no further than that. They just sit there, not even redrawing themselves properly. The other users I've created don't suffer from the problem. If I move the .kde2 directory in /root sideways and log in without it, then everything works fine (except of course, I lose the original root KDE setup with its nice "bomb going off" background and stuff.) So I'm guessing some part of the configuration has been trashed somehow. Can anyone tell me (a) what might be going wrong, or at least (b) where can I grab the original .kde2 directory that the SuSE setup kindly provided for me? I've tried looking on the CDs, but I can't see it anywhere obvious... If I can get back to square one, then I'll do a diff of the directories and see if I can figure out what's causing the problem. Thanks, Matt

Try going to /opt/kde2/bin [if it's a kde2 app ] and running it from a term window. Then you might get to see any error messages. Nick

You could try to remove/reinstall all of the KDE based RPMs fro the SuSE cd... but that's rather drastic just to get a "bomb going off" screen, right? You could always look in the old .kde2-sideways directory, and see where that background image is, and place it in your new .kde2 directory. Good luck, Steven

Well, it wasn't just the "bomb going off" that I wanted back. Having played about for a while, I found that if I deleted all the files in the .kde2/tmp-<hostname>/ directory, everything started working again. Don't know what's going on there, but I'm happy enough now :) M
