Our lan is autofs NIS. Should the server have kde 3.1 installed from SuSE 8.2 before I upgrade the clients? At the moment it's a runlevel 3 only box. Upgrading just one client to 8.2 really slows kde down. I was wondering if there is a conflict between 3.0 and 3.1 on the same lan. Or maybe we should wait for some downtime and do the whole lot at once? Maybe 3.1 puts different stuff into .kde than 3.0? (sorry to repeat but got no hits last time so we're still with 8.1 :-( Cheers, Steve.

No, there's no need to have the desktop installed at all.

In what way?

Can't see any reason why there should be.

Yes, it does. Are you loading KDE off the network? Dylan

KDE is local on the clients but the .kde is stored for each client on the server as we use NIS and autofs. Users who have logged in on the client which has 8.2 have noticed a much slower response to everything, especially OOo and gimp, to the ones that haven't. The link to the folder in /tmp in ~.kde has grown from 26Mb to 106Mb. I think the whole lot will have to be upgraded at the same time. And thanks, It's nice to know that the server can stay text. Or WHY Cheers, Steve.
