[opensuse] mouse pointer stuck on tiny
I asked most of this on the KDE3 list, but I have the same problem in Gnome, so am asking with expansion here. Google hasn't found me anything less than 8 years old. I also tried digging through ~/.kde/share/config/ trying to figure out what was causing his 11.3 mouse pointer to be big, but so far struck out on that too. Every setting I've spotted so far seems to point to default (e.g. kdminputrc_mouse_cursorsize="" in startupconfig). I'm trying to configure Bob S's system after installing 12.1. His vision has gotten too bad to do initial installation himself any more. I've been looking all over both KDE3 and Gnome for a way to get big mouse pointers, and am having no luck. KControl->Peripherals->Mouse is void of anything to do with sizes, while in gnome-tweak-tool, nothing I choose has any effect. I've tried alternate themes, including *accessible*, but all seem stuck with the standard little mouse pointer and hand that are smaller than a dried up lentil at high DPI. I went through YaST2 software management looking for accessibility theme and mouse settings type packages available and missing, but no luck there either. Something must be missing from the install, but what could it be? Do I have to install NetworkManager to get the mouse to work right? Nearly everything seems to require NetworkManager any more. :-p Any ideas? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Can't tell. Installation instructions if there are any seem to be well disguised. I'm not in the habit of using any but default themes, so know nothing about adding optionals. :-( Plus, it seems both KDE and Gnome ought to have at least one large easy to find and enable optional pointer by default, but those too are well hidden if they even exist. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." The way to install pretty easy.... Go to "System Settings", "Workspace Appearance", "Cursor Theme" and pick "Install New Theme" and then point to the downloaded tar file. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I thought compressed archives need first to be unpacked before their content could be installed, except those with names ending in .rpm or .deb. Anyway, after OP I talked to Bob about this, who said look for a doc on his system named *mouse*. It contained the following: ######## create an '.Xdefaults' file in your home directory and add the following lines: ------- Xcursor.size: 32 Xcursor.theme: tuxcursor ------- Availiable Sizes: 32 (small), 48 (medium), 64 (big, but max. detail) ######## So I copied his .Xdefaults file from 11.3's home to 12.1's home and restarted. Works in KDE (not at all in Gnome, no big surprise). As to KDE, if all it takes to make a mouse cursor bigger is a couple of lines in a config file, why can't KControl do that with a select list or radio buttons in its mouse section or accessibility section, instead of making people spend hours searching for a way to do it manually? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Not when it comes to themes. Did you even try it? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I found Bob's solution before seeing your reply, and it seemed good enough that I can let Bob try yours in KDE if he wants. I left the download in his Downloads directory for that purpose. I also tried kcminputrc_mouse_cursorsize="" in ~/.kde/share/config/, which has the same apparent effect as Bob's .Xdefaults. Tomorrow I may try yours in Gnome, since Bob's solution didn't work there. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." My solution was a KDE solution as it uses a file downloaded from KDE-look.org and uses the KDE systems settings. It doesn't apply to GNOME. Maybe a GNOME user will have something interesting to say.... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

systemsetting -> workspace appearance -> cursor theme
From there you can "activate" any installed theme or install more from kde-look or from a downloaded file. -- "We stand behind all of our products, except for the manure spreader." -- Corporate motto of an equipment manufacturer -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Felix, I'll take a look. I ran across this a while back and IIRC the settings are in ~/kde/share/config/(major config file for kde) can't recall the name, that's what I'll have to look for. There are options that get added to the file after initial config for sizes for all different desktop parts and I believe there is a runtime option for cursor size. Ahah! 22:31 alchemy:~/.kde/share/config> cat startupconfig #! /bin/sh # kcminputrc Mouse cursorTheme '' kcminputrc_mouse_cursortheme="DMZ" # kcminputrc Mouse cursorSize '' kcminputrc_mouse_cursorsize="" # kpersonalizerrc General FirstLogin true kpersonalizerrc_general_firstlogin="False" # ksplashrc KSplash Theme ksplashx-suse ksplashrc_ksplash_theme="ksplashx-suse" # kcmrandrrc Display ApplyOnStartup false kcmrandrrc_display_applyonstartup="false" # kcmrandrrc [Screen0] # kcmrandrrc [Screen1] # kcmrandrrc [Screen2] # kcmrandrrc [Screen3] # kcmfonts General forceFontDPI 0 kcmfonts_general_forcefontdpi="0" Play with kcminputrc_mouse_cursorsize="" and restart kde3. You may have to create larger glyphs with convert, but that should just be a wildcard change to -resize 200% or so. Let me know. If I have more time tomorrow, I'll give it another look, but I've go depos on Wednesday so I'll be under the gun tomorrow... I removed 'Xcursor.size: 32' & 'Xcursor.theme: tuxcursor' from .Xdefaults and tried 36, 48 & 64. 36 made it larger. 48 made it what appears to be the size he has in 11.3. 64 made it the same size as 48. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
