Video frequency too high for my LCD
Dear list; I'm using SuSE Linux 9.3 now since it has been released. When 10.0 final came out, I installed it and realized, that my LCD monitor couldn't handle the video frequency (the message was: "Video frequency too high"). There, i parked 10.0 and waited for 10.1. Now, 10.1 RC1 is out, i've tried that version to install and got the same fault during installation progress (at the point where you can set up the graphic card). SuSE now runs in version 10.1 RC1 in a screen resolution of 800x600 with a hardware manufactor of Hyundai, model L50S. As soon as I try to run a higher resolution, the monitor can't handle it. Physically, I have a LCD monitor manufactured by Hyundai, the model is called L70S, it's a 17" screen. I have already tried to change the frequency parameters in SAX2, without success. The reason why I'm wirting on this mailing list is because i already had the problem on the released version of 10.0 so maybe i'm running into troubles which already are in the released version. I can't imagine that I'm the only one having such kind of problem, so maybe one of you have a simple HowTo for me, I'd be so very glad to hear. Thank you a lot! Thomas

You're not alone :-) I've seen this at work on some machines. Usually what I do is I lower the vertical scanrate a little until it works. Alternatively, why don't you just copy the relevant device section and modelines from your 9.3 xorg.conf? Hans

Are you not able to choose the L70S monitor in SaX2? If it isn't listed then you can add it to /usr/share/sax/api/data/cdb/Monitors and it'll be there until the next update/upgrade replaces that file. As root, edit /usr/share/sax/api/data/cdb/Monitors and add the specs using another monitor as a template. Doing a 'cat /usr/share/sax/api/data/cdb/Monitors | grep HYUNDAI' doesn't show the L50S or the L70S. So you'll probably have to add it.
I have already tried to change the frequency parameters in SAX2, without success.
I'd try using a generic LCD 1024x768@60 setting or whatever is the native value for that monitor. That will also work.

If adding the monitor's specifications as a new entry in the Monitors database is the fix then you or I can add it into Novell's bugzilla and it'll be there in the future.

I've had issues with Samsung Syncmaster monitors in SUSE Linux but they are all resolved now because the Monitors database has been updated. Thanks SUSE!!!
Thank you a lot! Thomas

Also in SaX2, Card and Monitor Properties, Change (monitor values), is the Utility Disk button to use the Windows *.inf file. That would be the quickest way to get the correct parameters entered in to SaX2. Then follow my earlier advice so its always there in the Monitors db.

I realized that SuSE detects the monitor as manufactured by IQT (also the L70S is the only one listed by this company). And that's the product it is working in SuSE 9.3. So i copied the values 9.3 detected automatically and put them into the fields of 10.1 and see there - it worked!

I've tried a generic LCD, but yet the lowest frequency didn't bring me up my screen.

I don't know what exactly to enter there because there are so many various fields. But maybe I can give you those informations I've entered and you can forward them? Thomas

Cut&paste the IQT information from the 9.3 /usr/X11R6/lib/sax/api/data/cdb/Monitors file into an email. I'll get that into bugzilla. That is _not_ in 10.0's /usr/share/sax/api/data/cdb/Monitors file. The Hyundai L50S is in 10.1 RC1. Progress. Stan

IQT:L70S { DDC=IQT0703 Hsync=30-78 Vsync=43-75 }
The Hyundai L50S is in 10.1 RC1. Progress.
Yup, I tried this also but didn't work, nor did a generic LCD lights up my screen. Thank you again for your fast and pretty good help! Thomas
Dear list, S Glasoe, Masaru Nomiya, Hans du Plooy; in April i've reported you a compatibility problem with my IQT L70S LCD. Please find all the hardware details in the archive (same topic). The report was during 10.1 RC1. If you remember, the problem didn't appear in 9.3. Now I've installed final 10.1 and the frequency-too-high-problem is still alive. It can be resolved by setting up the system with a resolution of 640x480 and changing detailed informations when the system is being started the first time. Using SaX2, you then can change the problem making Hsync and Vsync values. I'm using the values from 9.3, a user without these informations is lost. One thing I've noticed: When entering the values 43-75 in Vsync, the 43 is being changed automatically to 50. -> ??? Thanks for taking notice! Thomas PS: There's another hardware problem since 10.1 with my Netgear and D-Link WLAN card. If you are interested in reading that, please find a second posting in the list.

Hi, I had a similar problem after i installed nvidia drivers. When i ran sax2 my screen would go blank cause of a to high refrsh rate. I used alt + ctrl and then - to lower the refresh rate and resolution to get a picture in sax2. After that i setup the H and V sync from the manual of the monitor and a resolution.
