[opensuse] Is it possible to roll-back or undo an entire upgrade?
I've recently upgraded a laptop from 11.4 to 12.2 - the upgrade went very well, no issues at all. However, the machine is clearly not "big" enough to run 12.2+KDE, and the user is now complaining about it being slow and difficult to work with. I could always re-install 11.4, but I thought I'd ask about the possibility of doing a downgrade? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (15.1°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Before doing anything so drastic you might want to try performance tweaking: 1:create /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/70-composite.conf containing: Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Disable" EndSection 2:disable automatic nepomuk/strigi startup: A:make sure ~/.kde4/share/config/nepomukserverrc includes: [Basic Settings] Start Nepomuk=false [main Settings] Storage Dir[$e]=$HOME/.kde4/share/apps/nepomuk/repository/main/ Used Soprano Backend=null rebuilt index for type indexing=false [Service-nepomukstrigiservice] autostart=false B:make sure ~/.kde4/share/config/nepomukstrigirc includes: [General] exclude folders[$e]=$HOME/tmp/null index hidden folders=false index newly mounted=false 3:go into desktop settings and deslect most or all of the individual effects If those alone are not enough: 4:install KDE3 and/or LXDE and/or XFCE & make it default WM Additional KDE tweaking questions should goto opensuse-kde and/or opensuse-kde3 list(s). -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Before you do all that, make sure none of the packages you installed pulled in "tracker". If they did, uninstall it. I always have serious performance problems if tracker is installed, and it is pretty much useless for KDE users, but it is easy to accidentally install. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Is this related to openGL compositing? When I go into "System Settings"->"Desktop Effects", it says OpenGL Compositing is disabled due to an earlier crash.

I upgraded a IBM Thinkpad T41 with comparable specs via a clean install from 11.2 to 12.2. Firefox is problematic, uses too much CPU and memory. With XFCE and Opera for routine browsing it is usable. I don't leave a browser running all the time on this machine, again only 2MB of memory. Too many of the packages I needed for work required a newer OS. I would not think of going back. But I knew this situation was temporary. The T41 was sitting in for a T520 that was in the shop. Ah, my age is showing. I have run Linux on systems with as low as 20MB of memory. My first computer, an IMSAI 8080, had 8KB of memory. The T41 has 2GB of memory. Jeffrey -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Before throwing all away try changing the main repos (oss,non-oss,update) to the 11.4 equivalents and disable all others. Then try using zypper dup after a ref. Okay, I tried it - initially it looked good, but then glibc got downgraded to 2.11.3, and things started falling over (message copied by hand): installation of <something> failed, Error: subprocess failed. Error RPM failed: rpm: /lib/libc.so.6: version GLIBC_2.15 not found (required by /usr/lib/librpm.so.2). I aborted the downgraded at this point, so now the system is presumably in some largely unknown state. I'll install 11.4 and see how that looks. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (14.7°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

There is another procedure: upgrade using the DVD. Boot the 11.4 DVD, choose upgrade, pray :-) - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Yeah, that's game over, at least when doing a live downgrade, you may have better luck with a DVD. This is an usecase that is not tested at all so it will probably go wrong. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yeah, I completely appreciate that - I did the downgrade on a separate, but identical machine, so no harm done to anything, but it sounded like something worth trying. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (10.6°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I don't have a DVD-burner, nor any DVD-media - maybe I'll try with a USB-stick.
