Icon previews in Konqui -- SuSE 10.0
Just received a hard drive for my laptop. Came with SuSE 10.0 pre-installed. If I open Konqui and go to a folder in my home directory, open that folder, and then click view >> preview from the top bar, I am presented with a list of file types that can show icon previews. **Missing** from among those file types offered is "video files." So presently all of my video clips show only a generic icon, and I am not given the option of turning on/off video file previews. Conversely, on my desktop, running SuSE 9.3, I am given the option of turning on/off video files, and so all of my video clips show a small image (I guess this is a thumbnail?) of what's on the clip. So.... Under SuSE 10.0 how can I get "video files" to be a displayed option in the list of possible previews? Thanks, gurus. Gil

Linuxcertified.com Very nice folks!

Nope. "video files" is not an option that's offered here. It is offered in 9.3. Gil

Alright young man... I have SUSE 10.0, KDE 3.5.1. What do you have, KDE 3.4.2 or so? Maybe that's the problem. Here 'video files' is the second to the last choice. Wait. I gave you the Desktop answer. You were asking about File Manager. I believe it is missing there. I can't find it where it used to be. Are you using Konqueror? Are you sure you are in "File Management' profile? Change to that profile and then check the menu options View, Preview, Video Files and see if its checked or not... Stan

The SuSE 10.0 laptop has KDE 3.4.2 level b. Does not give me the option for previewing video files. Interestingly, on my desktop with SuSE 9.3, the KDE is 3.4.0 level b and that DOES give me the option to preview video files. How's them apples? :o)

Yes

Yes.

Switched to Midnight Commander just in case something mysteriously "hung." The switched back to "file management" but still there is no option to preview video files. Thx! Gil

Not good. I don't want to revert back to KDE 3.4.0

Well I can't duplicate what I just did. I've stopped, restarted, switched from-to in Konqueror in almost all of its various profiles and I can't get the File Management profile's View, Preview option back! There seems to be a bug a foot. Need to logout and back in to check this. Stan

OK. I re-read your original post and I am baffled. Best answer I can give is update to KDE 3.5.1 because "Video Files" is in the list - for me. :) Still searching for where the configuration of the View, Preview options are now located, if there are any. They seem to have been removed from the Konq settings and/or the KDE Control Center. Stan

Now this is REALLY strange. I just checked my wife's desktop PC, also SuSE 10.0 with KDE 3.4.2 level b (same as my laptop) and she DOES have "video files" available as an option for previewing! So my laptop doesn't give the option to preview video files but her desktop does. Now, how's THEM apples??? Gil

Well, from the top of my slide rule I would guess that your wife knows something that you don't and my suggestion would be that you ask *her*... :-) Regards, Jos. -- Jos van Kan registered Linux user #152704

Asked when this first came up. She has no idea why her computer offers an option that mine does not. Maybe somewhere there is a configuration choice that needs to be ticked, but where??? Gil

It's probably a female thing and, if so, you'll NEVER find it. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2
