SuSE 10 installation onto a dodgy hard disk
Hi, I need to install SuSE 10.1 onto a machine that has some "issues" :-) It has a single Windows NTFS partition (/dev/sda2, which I want to keep) and a load of free space I've made available for my Linux installation. The problem I keep encountering is that because there are some duff sectors on the Windows partition the SuSE installation keeps hanging. Pressing ALT+F4 reveals a terminal in which there is a list rolling over and over telling me that there are duff sectors on /dev/sda2 I.e. it's checking the whole of the disk..... How can I tell the SuSE installation to ignore /dev/sda2 when it comes to doing the installation? Obviously my long term goal is to retire this disk and replace it with something less crap, but in the meantime I need to get Linux up and running on this machine ASAP. Hope someone's got an idea on this, my searching has drawn a blank. How can I tell the SuSE installation to ignore /dev/sda2 when it comes to doing the installation?
I would only cause a problem if it was mounting that partition. If it is can't you open a different terminal and umount it? Matthew
Hi, You're absolutely right - the installation _IS_ trying to mount the partition (I'm not sure why). Looking at the terminal output it seems the installer knows to use the NTFS driver, and then mounts the partition - it then seems to be performing some sort of disk checking (not sure why). Not sure if I'll be able to interupt the checking process to unmount the partition. Is there any way to instruct the installer not to try to mount this partition (i.e. marking it as "bad")? Thanks for your help. Jon. Matthew Stringer wrote:
