[SuSE Linux] Need your support for S.u.S.E Newsgroup
Hi All, I don't know why S.u.S.E doesn't have any newsgroup for their product while other linux distributor has theirs? Anyway, I suggest there should be newsgroups so we don't have to browse through 5-6 hundred email to find out answers to our problem. I think its not me, but most of you out there feel the same way. So, we all need to send our feedback to S.u.S.E Inc. our need as customers. Following few sounds good... comp.linux.suse comp.linux.suse.setup comp.linux.suse.admin comp.linux.suse.application comp.linux.suse.network comp.linux.suse.misc and there could be others specific to certain areas (like Database programs, Office and so on) == "Your mouse has moved. I'm all for this. SuSE is one very high volume mailing list and I'm going to run out of disk space soon at this rate. I want it all on Usenet so I can look it up on www.dejanews.com. I'd have to agree with Brad on this one. The newsgroup would add a ton of noise vs what's on the list. More spam for all, etc. Just read some of the newsgroups now, and you'll get the idea. The problem with message boards, especially for those of us who have to pay metered phone charges, is that you have to use them online. With the proper software, you can treat a mailing list as the same as a newsgroup (with the exception that you automatically get all messages.) The disadvantage is that some mailing lists (and/or the participants) do not thread the messages properly which makes it much harder (for those of us with threading mailers) to follow, though the Suse lists are above average in that most messages thread properly. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A>

A newsgroup isn't always better than a mailing list. But there are many people who would ask a question / get involved in a newsgroup, who wouldn't do so with a mailing list. Mailing lists are high volume, you have to subscribe to them & so, they are not viable to everyone. - You can't just pop into a mailing list every once & a while like you would with usenet. It would be great to have a mailing list as well as a newgroup, for some, one is better than the other. Search for "microsoft" on your usenet server, MS has more newsgroups than you can count on your fingers & toes. bye. PS - I still think an alt.os.linux.suse is a good idea. All the other main distributions seem to have a usenet group of some sort.

I think a newsgroup would be good for name recognition of SuSE. It would sit right next to the Red Hat and Debian groups in linux.suse.*. If nothing else, SuSE may get more defections from RH and others. I switch to SuSE when I saw it at Borders and was having lots of trouble with Red Hat. I like the idea of newsgroups. I also would like an IRC channel with bot or IRC Server for SuSE users with different channels, developers, users etc. I find one SuSE channel on EFnet, with 3 guys in it all the time. Probably they are trying to get people to join them, so they can discuss SuSE linux. It would be very helpful to get some real time psuedo-response from a IRC channel. There are lot of channels dedicated to specific distributions. Debian has their own IRC server and has very active developers chating and helping (when feeling generous) the users. Hopefully, SuSE developers will setup an IRC server dedicated to make SuSE more accessable. Just my .02 cents. Because instead of downloading hundreds of email messages every week we could just sift through what we wanted using dejanews. And all the warnings of doom about S/N ratio are way off. The noise is already here. Being a newsgroups could hardly make it worse. Anyway it could be moderated. Alternatively we could have a digest like Red Hat do, for those who prefer a mailnig list. Why not do what the Solaris list does - all messages go on a central server, fully HTMLized, and the server sends out ONE email per day with hyperlinks to each message. This would save disk space on the clients, allow full searching on the server, and minimize the amount of email that a person receives. Wow, I currently get spammed by folks on this list. Imagine putting all of this on a newsgroup! More crap to deal with. A FAQ for SUSE 5.x posted weekly would be a good idea. I can understand that people need a quick solution to a problem, but then half or better don't even look at the database on SUSE, nor (if you don't know) look at the tremendous info available via <A HREF="http://localhost</A">http://localhost</A>. Apache installed with the .html stuff, nor the /usr/doc/* info. If folks would take the time to read then the bandwidth here would be cut in 1/2 easy. Just my opinion... I agree their is a tremenous amount of info on the <A HREF="http://localhost</A">http://localhost</A> the problem may be that folks dont know that suses httpd works rite out of the box!!
