Leap 15.2 sudden loss of ethernet
while using my ACER E5-575 I suddenly lost my ethernet port access. I had a friend check it and the connection works under a usb flash connected distro. But it no longer works in Leap even with delete and adding it back. I can and will do a reinstall Monday if I can not make this work. There should be a solution but I did not find anyone else online having it. I am having my friend test the wireless which I do have locally. What if any elegant solution short of complete reinstall will correct this? Check the logs for any reference to eth0. Also find out when it appeared last. Try booting with a previous kernel. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.2 x86_64 at Telcontar)

The problem is no recent kernel changes to blame. Last update was days before the loss. Also no reboots. I was shopping online in Firefox when suddenly it quit. Check the basics. Make sure you don't have a dhcp server issue (wherever you get your IP from). There can be a problem with a lease that isn't up yet preventing your normal hostname from obtaining an IP while a USB distro will succeed. A reinstall is a bit drastic -- like open-heart surgery when a bandaid is all that should be needed. There are not a whole lot of things that can get screwed up on the 15.2 end -- but a lot on the other side. Check the logs as Carlos indicated, post what you find here and we can go from there. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Nothing of the logs makes sense unless its not /var/logs/messages. A friend got it back up but /etc/resolv.conf on reboot gets restored to 0 length. The trick was to use pico and edit the file to say namespace 8.8.8.8 but that does not work now. Ill have to sneaker net the tests over to this machine. Its not the router as it works for the DV6000 and the Dell with Peppermint. I agree reinstall is drastic but if elegant does not work its the only thing. Ill rerun the tests after work. That may be a bug. I've seen the new methods of managing resolv.conf mishandle it in a number of ways. The systemd networkctl and be unfriendly to a custom resolv.conf, but if you have created a custom resolve.conf, networkctl (and any of the other network managers) are supposed to be smart enough to not break what you have written. Let us know what you find. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
