Hi all, Feeling stupid :-( I wanted all the good fonts from microsoft windows so started KDE"s font installer and selected all the fonts from win for installation - as root. The installer gave error for two of them [I did not note which two] and the rest seemed to go fine. But after that I lost my fonts completely. KDE would startup but would report errors with loading fonts [says "NO fonts found"]. Enlightenment etc menus are also invisible. Many windows are unrendered. After looking at many config files, I have been unable to locate where the problem could be.. Following is my game plan. 1. Remove all the TrueType directories [from my and root's home directories as well as from /usr/X11R6/share/fonts etc etc]. 2. Then remove all the packages searchable from yast [containing word font] and reinstalling them after a reboot [paranoid, I know]. But if there is someone with a little more insight than me, would they like to tell more? Best would be someone who has already faced this problem? -- Rohit ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 56792108 G9,F-1,Chandivali : SDE : TLSI : 9821394599 AT bplmobile DOT com This mail was sent using Linux. Rohit, If you installed, as you say, with the KDE control center's font installer and did so as user, then the fonts were installed in your user directory. Either create a new user or search out the fonts in your user directory to delete them. If you installed as root, then you installed the fonts in your /usr/X11R6/share/fonts/truetype directory and you will have to remove them from there and run your /sbin/SuSEconfig afterwards to correct the problem. Shall try this and let you know. Thanks for your response. But are these the only things installer would change? Or is there something else also changed. Why should I get the error "No fonts found" ?? At least the old fonts are all there... Yes, that should be all you need to look for is the fonts. Everything is done within the particular font directory you installed them. Because some/most of the Truetype fonts are just plain bad! As with many things in Windows, many of the truetype fonts are not worthy of being used. There are some very good truetype fonts too, like the Bitstream Vera fonts, but the best procedure to follow is only install a few at a time to see if they mess with the other fonts installed. Check the permissions of the font files. I had this problem once and it turned out that all of the font files were owned by root with NO permissions for the users. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2)

Hi, Worked like a charm. Thanks to you for help. Still can not imagine why this kind of error should come up - but being in development for 4 years now, know that these error messages no matter how well intended, can lead to painful misleads - so not bothering with the messages now.
