[SLE] Good Sturdy Email Client- wanting recomendations
Hi All, One of the things that have prevented me from moving from windows to Linux is having the email client, evolution crash all the time with the volume of email I have. My total email volume is about 800-1000 emails per day, most of them from lists and are directed to folders. After I have about 2 thousand or so emails Evolution starts behaving badly, in it crashes and freezes. Well the last time I tried to migrate about 2 years ago it did. I have a total of 4.9G in Outlook public folders, which i will want to convert across. Can anyone reccomend a good GUI email client which will be sturdy enough to cope with high volumes of email, and has the ability to cope with automatic rules for forwarding the mail. I have purchased a copy of Crossover office pro to allow for me to run outlook if necessary, but would rather not have to use that. One 1 system, I have Thunderbird thatis the most user friendly and is fast, I have 50,000+ emails. One the second system, I have Sylpheed-Claws, with about the same volume, I like it even better than Thunderbird. -- Thanks http://www.911networks.com When the network has to work -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com
You can try Mozilla Thunderbird. I'm using it for quite a while now with large volume of mail everyday and it doesn't give any problems. The main problem with that when compared to MS Outlook I see is I'm not able to set remainders & follow-ups for mails. - Jack On 7/20/06, Shane A Broomhall (AUST) <shaneb@shanebroomhall.com> wrote:

I too have a lot of email and a lot of rules, some POP but largely in multiple IMAP accounts. Over the years I've tried Evolution off and on but always find it too buggy and slow. I've been quite happy with Thunderbird. - Bruce -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

another vote for Sylpheed Claws. Creating filter rules seems like it could be easier - but once you get the hang of them they are ok. Plus, I set up processing rules on the folders so they dump msg's older than 7 days so they don't overload. There's also the basic Sylpheed if that suits you. -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

I've been running kmail for years. Since it gained the ability to use maildir instead of mbox several releases ago, its been quite stable and fast. It has almost automatic rule creation, and handles lots of mail boxes (directories). In fact, the more the merrier, as the finer you sort the faster it is. I use the automatic expiration on those folders that I don't need to retain (mailing lists which are searchable anyway like this list). That keeps the folder size reasonable. I gotta say you got Spunk! Showing up here touting Outlook!! Cheeky! I've had to salvage more than one user's Outlook folder system when it gets too big, and don't find it at all fun. It is not entirely reliable on windows and I wouldn't trust it under XoverOffice -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

i've used kmail since 2000 and never had a problem with it (well, not since 2001 or so).

kmail has excellent support for lists. -- ----- stephan@s11n.net http://s11n.net "...pleasure is a grace and is not obedient to the commands of the will." -- Alan W. Watts

Your experience is unusual. I've you've evolution for years and process LOTS of e-mail, evolution crashes so rarely I can't remember the last time it happened.

I use Kmail too. And I'm a kind of person that almost never delete email except spams and very large emails. So far I have around 700,000 email in my Kmail. Well, I'm not really sure. I just like to collect things through my whole life. For example, I still keep my old diary from junior high school, some college-time text books, a bunch of old games discs (and those 5,25" floppies before there were destroyed by a flood). A box of high school-love letters, before finally I burned them when I got married, programs/files that I have downloaded since my early days of internet in 1998, etc. This is one of example from the good old webdesigning times in 2000: http://startrek.arinet.org In short, I like to keep things, memories. Including emails. I wonder whether I can have 5 million emails when I get 40 years old :) -- Fajar Priyanto | Reg'd Linux User #327841 | Linux tutorial http://linux2.arinet.org 10:40am up 1:55, 2.6.16.13-4-default GNU/Linux Let's use OpenOffice. http://www.openoffice.org -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

I just counted over 25,000 email messages on my home system. All the emails are in MH format (I used exmh a number of years ago). My email client is sylpheed-claws. It is relatively stable. My email is kept in hierachial folders, and although I subscribe to a number of email lists, like this, I generally do not save the emails since I can always go to the archives. I use procmail recipes to filter emails into various folders leaving the inbox open for a small number of emails and unlearned SPAM. I run postfix as my MTA with port 25 open in my firewall. I also use fetchmail to grab email from my ISP. While I have had some crashes with sylpheed-claws, it has held up very well in contrast to KMail that I use at work, although I do find KMail to be excellent also. One caveat about sylpheed-claws is that it does not have the capability to create html. It can read html emails using either dillo or gtk2 plugins. I generally build from sources, but RPMs are available. Additionally, claws has the ability to add actions, which can be simple scripts. It is a good light-weight client for both Linux and Windows and uses the GTK2 libraries. -- Jerry Feldman <gaf@blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix user group http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9 -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

i had the same problem, but there's a workaround: it runs notably faster if you re-organize large folders into smaller subsets. Another alternative is to back up your mailbox, then go delete any older mails. -- ----- stephan@s11n.net http://s11n.net "...pleasure is a grace and is not obedient to the commands of the will." -- Alan W. Or run Outlook. Well, it can't be Outlook because my Entourage does the same thing! ;) (the first few times it did it I thought I was loosing my mind... still not sure but...) :-P Thanks, George -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

I use kmail and currently have about 4,500 emails in various folders....
