[opensuse] Weird dvd unit failure
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 i Hi, I have been having weird crashes while boot of my hibernated desktop machine. First symptom appears to be stuck bios on detecting devices. I hit reset, continue. Machine boots, restores hibernation, and when going to display graphics, suddenly crashes and reboots. Of course, a reboot on an hibernated machine is a kind of catastrophe: many files are open, and the mandatory fsck of ext4 partitions takes for ever. Happened 3 or 4 days. Tonight I noticed a strange message about a SATA interface going to 1.5 GB. Crash. I track that message: <0.6> 2015-11-08 03:47:31 Telcontar kernel - - - [ 2.070499] ata12: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x6880 ctl 0x6800 bmdma 0x6488 irq 19 <0.6> 2015-11-08 03:47:31 Telcontar kernel - - - [ 2.531039] ata12: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300) <0.6> 2015-11-08 03:47:31 Telcontar kernel - Dead. (I don't think I have seen test software for DVD units? :-? ) I have unplugged the SATA cable from the computer to this DVD unit. Let's see if this way it does not crash. And I was not using the unit. It just had a forgotten disk I had read a week or two ago. So... now I have to get a new unit. It will not be an LG again, bad hardware. I have seen a Liteon or a Samsung for about 16€. Wow, these things are cheap now. Cheap as dirt, and reliable as dirt, I guess. Sigh. Is it worth it to get a unit capable of Blu Ray? Last time I looked, write media was very expensive, and people were having problems writing to them in Linux. Is it still true? - -- Cheers Carlos E. R. I use a Pioneer BDR-209DBK for burning. No problems with HTL and LTH Disk. But not a cheap device... I use K3b but have to use cdrecord (cdrtools) for burning http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/apps/openSUSE_13.2/ http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/libs/openSUSE_13.2/ As media I use "Vertatim Data Live Plus" (HTL) for backup purpose (expensive, about 1€ each) and cheap LTH for all other non important things. not mandatory, but si better than the default it's really a bargain :-) what you can't do is authoring for a video BD, I know of no Linux app able to do so, but it's so easy to write mp4 HD files... jdd -- When will a Label sign her!!? https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=94&v=BeMk3WRh8QI -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Blu ray? I don't think I saw that brand in my quick search.

Yes, that's not strange.

If it is Blu ray, it is not expensive. If it is DVD, I use verbatim myself, but not that one. Verbatim#43500, the label says. AZO. There is a web pages that does comparisons of brands; let me see... <http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm> and also: <http://adterrasperaspera.com/blog/2006/10/30/how-to-choose-cddvd-archival-media/> There is a program that can identify the real brand of media. The first link explains about it. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)
