[SLE] Multiple X-sessions?
Is there a possibility to run several X-sessions at the same time?
I want my regular 1440x1080x32bbp running at the same time as a
800x600x8bpp
Can it be done?
I susspect some switch added to 'startx' but i cant seem to find it in the
docs and man-pages...

There sure is. Configure X (XF86Config) with XF86Setup or a similar program to include the resolutions you want. Then start x like this 'startx -- :z -bppy', where y is an integer not used by a running X-server (look for lock files in /tmp) and y is 8 or 32. Try `startx -- -bpp8 :1'. Ciao, Stefan -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Should be:`startx -- -bpp 8 :1'

Yep, you're right. Couldn't try it out because I'm using Accelerated X which doesn't even have this option. Sure. You can have multiple X _servers_ running.
YOu have to tell the Xserver where to put itself tho (ie, where to put the
display!); this is done with a :0, :1, etc etc.
Not quite sure how you do this via startx; the default startx prog lets ya
pass Xserver options after the -- special option. ie, to start in 32bit
color mode, ``startx -- -bpp 32".
Try, maybe, ``startx -- :0'' and ``startx -- :1''? (or course you need a
couple of free ttys for this to work)
[[I haven't tried running two _local_ sessions. I usually have one local
session (started via startx) and one remote session (started via
Xwrapper -query xdm.host.com :1) for talking to a remote box running xdm.]]
Lemme know if that works for ya.

Apologies; didn't provide a complete answer.
AH.. looks like someone already made the post.
Yes, ``startx -- -bpp 8 :0'' and ``startx -- -bpp 32 :1''. Chances are you
have a default resolution set in /etc/XF86Config; you'll need to change
resolutions (control-alt and keypad plus&minus?? I don't remember.. hehe)
from the keyboard, assuming you don't have DontZoom defined in your
/etc/XF86Config (it's not defined by default last I knew, so unless you
changed it you'll be alright)

I think the trick is to type at another virtual console (Ctl-Alt-F2, say): startx -- :1 That starts X on display #1. To switch between display 0 and display 1, use Ctl-Alt-f7 and Ctl-Alt-F8.
