Re: [SuSE Linux] Why is Yast's package search so slow?
Yes, same here. It takes *forever* to search the system for installed packages. -----Original Message----- From: Paul W. I've noticed that when I use Yast to search for installed packages on my system (using F5 under Package Information), the search takes several minutes - far longer than it takes to search the CDROM. Since the search appears to be almost entirely a CPU computation, I'm puzzled as to why it should take so long. Have other people had the same experience?

Hmm, I cannot reproduce this. What _exactly_ did you do? Here's what I did: 1. Started Yast 2. Choose/Install Packages 3. Package Info 4. Typed "kde" after the colon (but anything else would do). 5. Pressed F5. The search took 2 1/2 minutes (under 5.3). Strange. I just repeated these steps and it worked fine... Does "top" show any unusual things? Which version of YaST do you use? I have 0.991.2 There's an update on our ftp-Server to version 0.991.3, this should solve the problem: yast.rpm YaST Version 0.991.3 with some bugfixes Fixed scanning RPM database. YaST was confused by packages with multiline summary entries. I took Lenz's suggestion and upgraded to the newest Yast (in the 6.0 directory on the SuSE ftp site, package a1). It solved the problem. Probably the reason he didn't see the problem we did is that he's been using the new version. (Aside to Lenz: you might want to verify that the old Yast has the slow search on your system, so as to be sure that an upgrade always solves the problem.)
