I am thinking about getting a WD Mybook but their site says it only works with Windoze and MAC. I use opensuse 11 RC1 now but when 11.0 comes out i will use that. So, does anyone know if there is Linux software just like the WD MyBook (win) software that will allow me to backup my data on opensuse 11? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Mine works fine on Opensuse 10.3. In fact, I've re-partitioned it to Reiserfs, and use it for automated backups. I can leave it plugged in all the time, but when my script dismounts the disk it will shut down the drive after a little while leaving only the electronics running. As soon as the backup script fires up and mounts the drive again it spools up. There is a few of windows specific pieces of software for backup and sharing and (in some models) sharing over the web, but I've never used those. Its been absolutely trouble free. -- ----------JSA--------- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You can format the drive to a linux format an use tar to backup with, are any other linux backup software that comes with suse. I do not use this drive but I have used ones from seagate to copy over files to that I wanted to keep.

I understand that but what i am looking for is software that acts like the WD MyBook software. With a gui and allows you to "see" the files in the backup. So, if i want to restore, say 3 files, i could browse the backup and restore those 3 files to either the original location or a different destination. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes such exist. Some free, some pretty cheap. http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/backuptools1.htm Most of those are available for opensuse as well as debian. -- ----------JSA--------- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I use a 1 TB WD MyBook with openSuse. I formatted it in 4 partitions with YAST (reiserfs, just because I am used to it), 3 of them encrypted (using Yast, very easy... when attaching the USB I am asked for the password), 1 "normal" for music etc. where there is no need to protect the data. I use simple tar commands that I have written down to simple text files which I made executable, gave them meaningful names.sh and put them in a directory "backup" on my desktop. I can now simply click the desired backup-"script". To restore or have a look at the backupped files I can use konqueror, I can even look at the compressed files and take out one of them per drag and drop. Can you have more "GUI"? There is lots of backup software and options available in Linux... you can go as simple as a daily cron job that copies your data to another location (like an external drive), or you can use apps like Bacula, KDE's Keep, mirrordir, mondo etc etc. Check your prices... you usually pay more for the custom backup drives over just a SATA drive in a USB housing. You pay more to get the no-brainer-custom-software.... which you can't use anyway. software that will allow me to backup my data on opensuse 11?
I just use a soft RAID 1 with a pair of internal SATA drives. It was easy to set up during my openSuSE 10.3 install. This won't give you snapshots or SneakerNET. But you don't have to do anything to back up. Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

You're kidding, right? I bet less than 10% of data loss is caused by hard drive failure, and that is the only one you have covered. Repeat after me: Mirroring is NOT a backup strategy. When you or software accidentally DELETE or CORRUPT by normal means, what happens to the mirrored image of that file? So... then, where's your backup copy?

You're kidding, right?
I only want a copy. @Matt
So... then, where's your backup copy?
I rsync to another partition when I need a backup of openSuSE before upgrading or configuring. I don't need previous revisions of photos and music. Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

So, after the upgrade you delete the backup, and then, you have NO backup. More: if you backup to another partition, remember that there are accidents that can destroy both the original and the backup partition. What Matt says is absolutely true: a raid is not a backup, it doesn't cover you from many types of disaster. For instance: - You accidentally delete a file: lost for ever. - The kernel has a bug, corrupts the filesystem. Both copies of the mirror are destroyed simultaneously, every thing is lost. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I use a shell script.

This is not a requirement of my backup.

Not worried about it. You left out comet strikes, flooding, earthquakes, fire, theft, tornados, and volcano eruptions. Mike -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
