[SLE] -- Install Problem #1 -- 3c509 -- 9.1 Pro -- also Win98
The 3c509 network card is declared during system boot up to be "not yet active" and "no interface found". I followed the instructions in section 13.4 (Network Integration - Admin Guide) using YAST. Everything OK with the card operation in the rest of my session. However, when rebooting, again the same problem. I have done this many times and cannot figure out what YAST should have done in the way of file set up but didn't. [using inetd]

What does this mean? That the network connection works, and you're only concerned about a message during boot? Or do you have to do something actively to start the network connection? One problem might be that you have DHCP and it takes a while to get the data to set up the card, so the network start script says "backgrounding", meaning it starts up other things while DHCP is waiting for the data in the background.
my answers == After opening the session and invoking YAST as previously explained the network connection works and other software dependent upon this connection works. I use STATIC IP ADDRESSES not DHCP. Although during the session and after using YAST everything with that interface works okay. But when I
Anders you asked << What does this mean? That the network connection works, and you're only concerned about a message during boot? I can send you the routing information or any other information. It is obvious that the interface does not come alive and perform as it should until I use YAST as explained and then only for the current session. Thanks -- TED

See? network is up. No problem listed, it got address 192.168.1.70 and reports "done", not "failed". The only problem is about rpc, but that is a different issue.

According to that, network is up and running, IMO. More clues? -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

Did you get the boot log messages? Do you need the full log? How do I get it
to you? Sent the entire boot file to andjoh@rydsbo.net. I think the next
failure in the chain of failures is "portmap".
Initially the portmapper script failed to execute so I changed the variable
used for the path to a hard address (same as used by the variable) and now
the script SEEMS to execute (seems strange?). However I don't know how to
determine if portmap is even running (tried ps -A and netstat -an and could
not see anything on portmap). If it is running during the current session
(per instructions on p-327 section 12.9.4) then it also only runs during the
current session as did the 3c509 module (now working OK at boot time per
your last suggestion).

boot process finds the network card hardware (3c509c) as "not (yet?) active and also on a second line while examining the hardware address -- in the form of some kind of count down -- producing the meassage "no interface found". YAST makes this hardware work but it does not work on the following boot up.
what do you get if you do "grep 3c5 /etc/sysconfig/hardware/*" ?
You might try editing /etc/sysconfig/kernel and adding 3c509 to MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT

Try editing /etc/sysconfig/boot and set RUN_PARALLEL to "no"
