[S.u.S.E. Linux] Problems sending mail
Hi all. I am in a network without DNS, all of us have the /etc/hosts and work with that. Our problems are with the mail. We just can't send mail. When we execute 'mail xxx@yyy' it says: xxx@yyy... Deferred: Name server: yyy.domain.: host name lookup failure domain is the domain of the localhost. Well, there is an entry in /etc/hosts for yyy and yyy.domain: 193.0.0.2 yyy yyy.domain and 'telnet yyy' or 'ftp yyy' or simply 'ping yyy' works perfectle. Also this instructions work with yyy.domain. We don't have and don't need DNS, so I don't know why it looks for a nameserver. Also I've seen that it looks it is not a problem with sendmail, because when I shut down the sendmail daemon and execute 'mail...' it says exactly the same. Anyway I began to read the sendmail.cf and it's a nightmare. I don't know what to do. Anyone had this problem? I've looked in dejanews and nobody gave a complete answer to this question although many people had the same problem. Bye. Xanti, I am no sendmail expert. From your posting I am not sure how many mail servers and domains you are running. Assuming it is only one: does "mail user_name" work i.e. w/o the domain suffix? If so, the problem could be due to how have you set up sendmail connection a) Internet i.e. a DNS somewhere or b) as UUCP connection. Under a) it is possible sendmail is trying to resolve MX records for the domain and therefore when it is remains unresolved it is deferred (just a thought). Also, check your resolv.conf table and make sure there is no entry there and verify if "named" is running in your system w/o any valid data (since all the relevant files are not populated). Haven't looked at sendmail source :) to figure out how it resolves names i.e. a) /etc/hosts then b) DNS. It might be worth a try to run a local DNS and resolve your local machine names/IPs. Once, you have found the solution please let us all know about it. Good luck. Arun Khan At 10:01 AM 98/05/22 +0200, you wrote:

Did you check out the Smart Host option of the sendmail configuration? I don't remember exactly which flag it is, but you can configure it in rc.init, Once configured, Sendmail will send any Unknown mail to the address that you specify:-) cya l8r Leon leonmcclatchey@homemail.com Santiago Rodriguez wrote:
