[SLE] Lost communication with my keyboard!
Note that all the following is from memory; I can't log into my computer, so I'm using my wife's XP machine for this message. Yesterday I decided to see what the Google Earth stir was all about. So, I downloaded it, installed it, and it didn't run. Terminated with a message like "Rage 128 timed out". I have an old ATI Rage 128 Ultra video card (at least that's what the Yast hardware program tells me), and an Envision 17" monitor. The Google Earth readme says I should have 3D acceleration enabled, so I looked into the video settings. I looked into the 9.0 paper manual and found reference to 3Ddiag, ran it, and it said 3D was working fine. So I went into sax2 to change the video mode to 3D, since I remembered that 3D on my card was "experimental, therefore dangerous", and I'd never had a need for it before. Apparently I was already in 3D accelerated mode, but I noticed that my monitor was set up for a 15" Envision. I reset it to the correct 17" selection, and, since it seemed to work fine, I restarted my machine. I'm now stuck at the KDE login prompt, able to move the mouse but not key in any characters to give my password. I'm pretty sure I made no other changes. I can boot up in safe mode, and I can deal with the command line and vi with no problem, but I don't know what to change to get my keyboard back in normal mode. Can anyone help? This is the first serious problem I've had since upgrading to 10.1, and I really need this machine, or I'd dig back into the manuals myself. Maybe its too late now but SAX usually saves the previous /etc/X11/xorg.conf file when it makes a new one. If you can find the right one, just rename it back to xorg.conf. And next time you try to make any changes.... save a copy of your last good xorg.conf before you make the changes..... -- Check the headers for your unsubscription address For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the archives at http://lists.suse.com Please read the FAQs: suse-linux-e-faq@suse.com

Actually, the very first response (from Rikard Johnels -- thanks!) solved the problem for me -- although I booted into the safe system, rather than putting in the kernel parameter for runlevel 3 (is there a difference?). Although, looking at the sax2 configuration now, I see it has set the monitor size back to 15". I think I'll let well enough alone for now :-). Unless someone can explain to me why a correct monitor setting kills communication with the keyboard?
