[SLE] suse database question
I have been acked to put together a database for my job the will track the flow of grants through the organization. This system is to record grant request and to track grants that are pending payment by our org. Because My job thinks the M$ is great they requested that I develop the database application using M$ Access. My question is this..Is there any other tool that I can use to do this project in linux. I would prefer to do something that I could control and create outside of X Windows. One of the tricky parts about this is that it 1 - must run on a windows platform and 2 - must be able to be eventually ported to a web application. If I have to use Access I will, but any help would be great. Hi, I would take a look at Inprise's Interbase RDBMS. It much better than Access as it is a full SQL Server. It also runs on most platforms (Windows, Linux, Unix, Netware, AIX, Solaris, VMS etc. etc.). Version 4 is free, and version six is to be released as Open Source. I use it all the time, and a lot of the time it is better suited than Oracle for small to Medium (< 200 users) applications. Cheers Phil

This is good news about Version 6 (see http://www.interbase.com ). However: the downloadable documentation package (for Version 4) appears not to include the "Getting Started" manual, though it includes the other 5 manuals. Does anyone know whether -- and, if so, where -- "Getting Started" may be obtained? www.interbase2000.org contains a lot more info..

I can't ever remember there being a getting started manual at least for versions 3 to 6. All versions come with the 5 standard manuals (API Guide, Language Reference, Data Definition Guide, Operations Manual and Programmers Guide). Some version came with a tutorial document, and the *NIX versions came with 'Installing and Running on UNIX' manual. If you want me to send you a copy, or you need any help, let me know.. It is only 'offically' certificated on rh4.2, but I works fine on SuSE 6.1 and 6.3 as well as many other distros. This is not a problem of certification or distros. This is a problem of the Licence: " ... I know a few of the R&D guys at Inprise, and I am trying to get an official response. The "official" response when you talk to them or phone them, is they don't care what distro you run it on as it is now an unsupported (but widely used) version. The reason the licence says it is certificated only for Red Hat 4, is that is the only version they tested it on (to be Y2K, QC etc.). As this version is only available in binary format they cannot guarantee that it will work with any other distro, but it should do. They actually helped me get it running on SuSE. Check out the MySQL. On their website are scripts that export to and from an Access database so you can do some easy development. Use Access on the clients with ODBC. MySQL can be used natively with PERL, PHP3 and PYTHON and via JDBC/ODBC with servlets. That's a big can of worms, Arjen ;). Another one to open would be PostgreSQL, which handles foreign keys and a whole bunch of other things that My simply can't do on the DB side. I don't know about JDBC or ODBC, sorry... -- -=|JP|=- Jon Pennington | Atipa Linux Solutions -o) jpennington@atipa.com | Kansas City, MO /\\ 816-241-2641 x121 | http://www.atipa.com _\_V -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
