OK, I'll answer your question but pose another one. If you can get to the "Update Index" window, you can specify the paths there that htdig needs. My question: how does one get to the Update Index window?

Now I'll answer my own question. You need to go into the Control Center / Help/ Index. There you can specify paths for htdig, htsearch, and htmerge. The paths that work on my system (and probably yours) are: htdig: /opt/www/htdig/bin/htdig htsearch: /usr/local/bin/htsearch htmerge: /opt/www/htdig/bin/htmerge If you go into the Control Center as root and look at this stuff, I believe there are some more options.
