Don't like messing with something which is already working.....so I will ask a question, before I jump. Can I install the packages with yast....do I need to play around with Sax 2? In the dim and distant past I have had problems with XFree upgrades, so I have been loath to change a working system. If I give in to the temptation this time it will be to have a higher version number......I know ... not...a terribly good reason to change ;-) Regards Brian

Here is what I learned version x.1.0 is a dangeroues version. think about all the problems with 7.0 of suse 7.0 of redhat 2.4.0 kernel etc. there are lots of screaming going on in the XFree86-expert mailing list regarding DRI issues. On the other hand I do not think SuSE is going to put a package to the ftp before they test it especially with the DRI. So linux is all about choice :-) -- Togan Muftuoglu

The simplest install method for binaries is simply 'rpm --nodeps -Uvh *.rpm' - it will just plonk everything into the right places (usually!).

I can't get DRI to work properly with 4.1.0 - 2D stuff seems to work fine, but if you attempt to make the DRI drivers as per the README on the FTP site, you (well, I do) get the following; In file included from gamma_drv.c:72: drm_vm.h: In function `gamma_vm_shm_nopage': drm_vm.h:110: structure has no member named `virtual' drm_vm.h:89: warning: `physical' might be used uninitialized in this function make[1]: *** [gamma_drv.o] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-modules/drm' make: *** [all] Error 2
On the other hand I do not think SuSE is going to put a package to the ftp before they test it especially with the DRI.
That's usually the case, but I've had a number of cases where upgrades just broke things. cheers, Gideon
I have installed 4.1.0 with no problems, mind you I am not using DRI.
The only thing I've noticed however is that EMACS now defaults to some
hideous new font. Where do I change that?

I'm using @home and I couldn't even get DHCP to work under windows. It used to about a year ago and then failed and neither my or the ISP could figure out why. They gave me my static IP address and I've been using that ever since. I know you may prefer to use DHCP, but you may not have any alternative other that using a static IP. If you continue to be unable to get your ISP to work with you comp regarding DHCP I would just get them to give you the IP, gateway, DNS hosts, domains, etc (if you don't already have it - I presume you do since I'm reading your post). It doesn't necessarily have anything to do with Linux per se - I may very well just be the ISP. Cheers. Curtis On Wednesday 13 June 2001 04:18 am, Corvin Russell wrote:
