[opensuse] Repeated messages in rsyslog.
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I'm ripping some CDs with audex. As a consequence, there are hundreds of repeated messages in the messages log, like: <0.6> 2013-01-25 03:15:17 Telcontar kernel - - - [45526.950289] sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive. <0.6> 2013-01-25 03:15:18 Telcontar kernel - - - [45527.964021] sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive. <0.6> 2013-01-25 03:15:19 Telcontar kernel - - - [45528.977722] sr0: CDROM not ready. Make sure there is a disc in the drive. Suposedly rsyslog should remove automatically those repeated messages, but it doesn't. /etc/rsyslog.conf: #$SystemLogRateLimitInterval 5 #$SystemLogRateLimitBurst 2000 Would I have to change that? Or perhaps I have to put a rule to remove that particular message? - -- Cheers, Carlos E. smells a bit like it is confused by the timestamps? Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yeah maybe - one message per second is perhaps also not enough to trigger the message suppression ? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (-1.2°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free DNS hosting, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Actually, rate limiting is not about suppressing duplicate messages. This is the applicable rsyslog directive: http://www.rsyslog.com/doc/rsconf1_repeatedmsgreduction.html -- Per Jessen, Zürich (-0.2°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - free DNS hosting, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
/etc/rsyslog.conf:
#$SystemLogRateLimitInterval 5 #$SystemLogRateLimitBurst 2000
Maybe I'm misled but in my /etc/rsyslog.conf there are lines like # reduce dupplicate log messages (last message repeated n times) $RepeatedMsgReduction on which leads me to believe that a) lines beginning with "#" are comments not directives, and b) a different directive is to be used to 'reduce dupplicate log messages'. Probably 'duplicate' ones as well :-) Just an observation. Maybe (a) is nonsense and rsyslog is a special case, despite the fact that the man page for rsyslog.conf(5) says <quote> Lines starting with a hash mark ('#') and empty lines are ignored. </quote> -- Any philosophy that can be put in a nutshell belongs there. -- Sydney J.
