Greetings, There has been talk on the list concerning the existence of a wordperfect rpm. For one reason or another, there are complications which prevent it from being distributed in the USA? I cannot locate this rpm on suse's servers for 6.1, 6.3, nor 6.4. It is not included on the cds that came with the box I bought. I have no problem with installing tarballs. I downloaded it from Corel twice to confirm it wasn't corrupted (very noisy lines out here, but shouldn't gzip/tar check for this?). Here is the actions I took to install this program, as output from 'script'. Note that my display is set properly. Sorry for the color, and all the other redundant control characters. Word Perfect Office 2000 stadard and pro work very nicely on suse 6.4 But , you neet to use a special install.tar script to install it on SuSE and then use a special setupWPO2000.tar script to set it up. I have them if you need , or you can email corel tech suport and ask them to email them to you. WPO2000 is a big imporovemnt over wp8 , I could not get wp8 to print in color using the pass throgh post sript and the chice of suported printers was very short and out dated. WPO2000 has worked with out a hitch and has a whole bunch of other stuff included. the delux addion adds clip art and fonts as well as paradox databse application. Office 2000 runs throgh wine , but its very usable an a P150 and 54 meg ram. Not bad at all for running under wine on such low end hardeware under xfce , it was a lot slower under KDE and WAY slower iunder corel/kde. Runs nicely nder suse and xfce. Funny, that. On a M$ system, I couldn't get O2K to load on anything with less than a P200/64MB. Kept getting msg "insufficient resources". Just shows what a superior OS can achieve :-)###

Afraid I haven't got a 'good' tarball yet from anywhere but freshmeat! Of course, My Mileage May Vary (since I'm a lead-foot hoon from way back!) Hmmm, Its both the front end and back end server I think. As I understand WPO2000 uses a unified code base that will run under wine , as well as on windows. Its no longer the modified unix version of WP8. It looks and acts like like its windows counterpart as its running under wine/linux. As to growing into a nive BIG database , I have not tried that yet , as I run a small famoly owned clothing stoe and am looking to use it to prottype some praposed database apps ect.. I cant wait for Delphi on linux. That would be wicked. I Too have realy been wondering if Paradox could be used with a real back end sql database as well but havent gotten any real answers to this yet. I would like to be able to use it with postgress SQL backend. That way when I want to move the client/app to a diffrent front end , all I need to do is recode the application. I ASSUME this IF its using the local interbase server that the above is possible. I am not sure if its only using the plian vanalla Paradox file format , or that it can aslo bet used with a SQL server. This I hope to look into a little further. Like I said , I want to use paradox for prototypeing and for plian generic users to add/edit several databses ect.. I realy dont want them using pgacess , and havent gotten into java/jdbc , nor learned c/c++. I am a little familiar with dbase/clipper and have done a couple databse apps with Delphi which is realy supper , but I cant get windows to stay stable enought with my travel schedual , therefore the move to linux. MAN you set it up and just LEAVE it. ROCK SOLID. That I realy like.

WOW. I have taken all my low end hardware and put linux on them , two P166s a P90 , and the P150 , and have only two dual boot for use with windows , one a p166 the other an AMDK6/350 . Win98 is the end of the road as far as windows is. Linux is ruling now. I set up the P150 just to test the idea of linux , and to see if it could meet my buissines needs , and so far have been shocked how well it runs on low end stuff. I only have two apps now that are M$ dependent so have kept the two dual boot machines. Corel WPO2000 was one app I wanted to check out and compare to applixware which I realy like , and runs beter on the same machine , and can handle a real SQL backend. It runs nicly under the P150/64 meg ram system. Its slow to start , and is a bit slugish , but thats to be expected on that class sytem. Its very usable though under wine. That realy surprised me. Note I use suse and xfce , it ran realy dogisg under corel 1.10 linux and the heavly modified kde . I had to compare them just to put my curiosity to sleep. Suse won out. No memory erros or warning . Just a lot of disk activi=ty at times. Wine/Linux must realy work better than the real M$ windows. Isent that something , a clone thats better than the original.

I still feel bad about the fact that it uses wine. I will wait till it is native code. If it ever is. I just don't like the idea. I never install wine or dosemu and sure don't want them installed by someone else. Samy Elashmawy wrote:

I have to admit, I was looking forward to getting Wordperfect Office until I found out it was not a linux native suite. I abandoned windows for a reason and I am not about to run linux just so I can emulate windows to run wordperfect. On Fri, 26 May 2000, Admiral Michael H. That can/will hopefully help to draw more users to linux , and thus give more support to justifiy a rewrite on linux or a re right ot the unix version, It does make sence to unify the code and have one code base , on todays nwere hardware , I am willing to use it under wine , as long as works and runs solidly. I havent had it crash yet on wine/linux , and on newer hardware , I dont think speed will be an issue.

It uses winelib. winelib is native Linux code, hand crafted by all those guys on the Wine project. The API is from Microsoft, and is therefore probably not the best for an X library, but I can't see any problem other than that. It makes the application rather top heavy which makes it slow, but that goes for Staroffice and other apps which have been generally accepted. Why do you object to winelib? I've seen several people moan that winelib based apps are not real Linux programs, but I don't understand the problem...

Thanks for the information, but I am looking only for a word processor. Is there an evaluation version of Corel Office 2000?

The one from tucows failed for me as well. What's going on here? A freshmeat comment suggests that the documentation for installation is incorrect, but its _very_ simple and straight forward.

I'll give some other places a try. Corel links to download.com, and so does freshmeat. If a 'good' tarball can be defined as one that will untar, and a 'bad' tarball will spit out some CRC errors, then all the archives I have been downloading are 'good' ones. Hello, concerning Star Office, it works great for me, except: 1) no unicode support 2) No TrueType font support (Yes, I know it can be rigged, but I don't want to) 3) Don't bother working in KDE, Star Office, with Netscape open all at once with just 64 MB Ram. It can be done, but at that point, things get slower. Less than 64, forget it. Pluses about Star Office: I get work done just fine in Star Office word processor and spreadsheet. Am quite happy with both. Database program sucks and I don't use it. It's free, which is a plus. And I open Word Documents and Excell sheets with no problems so far, as long as they are not version 2000. George Sat, 27 May 2000, ÷Ù ÎÁÐÉÓÁÌÉ:
