RE: [SuSE Linux] Why is Yast's package search so slow?
Is the update of the man db running (from cron.daily) ? (you may see some "find" processes when using top)

Hmm, I cannot reproduce this. What _exactly_ did you do?
1. Started Yast 2. Choose/Install Packages 3. Package Info 4. Typed "kde" after the colon (but anything else would do). 5. Pressed F5.
The search took 2 1/2 minutes (under 5.3).
Strange. I just repeated these steps and it worked fine... Does "top" show any unusual things? Which version of YaST do you use? I have 0.991.2
There's an update on our ftp-Server to version 0.991.3, this should solve the problem:
yast.rpm YaST Version 0.991.3 with some bugfixes Fixed scanning RPM database. YaST was confused by packages with multiline summary entries.
Bye, LenZ

Is it possible to use version 0.991.3 with the 5.3 release? And aside from that, are there any problems in using the existing Yast to install the new Yast (since the existing one will be running during the procedure)? Since YaST is statically linked, it should also work on a 5.3 system, but I cannot give you a guarantee for this. You need to update YaST using rpm: "rpm -Uh yast.rpm". If you experience wierd results, remove the new package with "rpm -e yast" and reinstall the version from CD or the latest one from the 5.3 update directory on our ftp-Server.
