Hello, I have run into som problems installing different applications from CD-Rom. As root I have got this: oboe:/cdrom/ApplixWare4.3 # ./install-applix bash: ./install-applix: Permission denied oboe:/cdrom/ApplixWare4.3 # which bash /usr/bin/bash And bash is there. Have looked into the file /etc/permission, said me nothing. And since I am a rather newbe I am for the moment stucked. Kernel 2.0.33 SuSE 5.2 In the logs no clue. By default the CDROM on a S.u.S.E. system is mounted with the "user" option which implies "noexec". Just do (as root): umount /cdrom mount -tiso9660 -r /dev/cdrom /cdrom This way the options from /etc/fstab are ignored and you are able to execute the install-applix script.

You should have a look at your /etc/fstab. The entry for your CD-ROM drive must include the "exec" option. (Something like ro,noauto, exec) You won't be able to execute programs from your CDs without this option set. Good luck! :-) Pål -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

In a last-ditch effort to get RealAudio running on my system, I'm trying to scrap the OSS drivers and install the alpha driver for my card (Ensonique Audio PCI, es1370). The drivers come in a gzipped file called pciaudio.tar.gz available at freshmeat and elsewhere. When I run make, I get the following error message: es1370.c:89: linux/modversions.h: No such file or directory. Any idea what header file is involved here? More importantly, has anybody attempted to install this driver, or compile a driver as a module to run the Ensonique Audio PCI? -- Glenn -- -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

As for the driver for Ensonique PCI soundcards, an alpha version has been posted at freshmeat -- you can find it by running a search, I believe. I downloaded, unzipped/untarred the driver, but get the following error message when running make: es1370.c:89: linux/modversions.h: No such file or directory. (es1370 is the version number of my Ensonique card.) Any idea what header file is involved here? (I posted a question re: this problem to the list a few days ago.) It'd be great to get the driver up and running, since OSS won't run correctly with RealAudio. Anybody know what might be going on? -- Glenn -- -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

You answered your own question. The header file missing is modversions.h and your patch is looking for it in the kernel source base directory. Do "find /usr -name "modversions.h" -print". If it shows up and it's in a different location that's an easy enough fix. If not, get on ftp search and download the .h file stick it in your kernel source directory and hope it compiles without any other work on your part. -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

Oh no! The file "modversions.h" is generated on kernel compile if you enable the option CONFIG_MODVERSIONS. If you do this, remember to rebuild your kernel and all the modules you use. It's not a good idea to use this file from another machine. I wonder why some driver wants to patch this file... Hubert, Thanks for the tip. Sheesh -- who knows why modversions.h is necessary? In any event, I found "modversions.h" in the Linux hacker's kernel and copied it into the /included directory. The compiler found it okay, but got hung up down the line. At this point, I'll either wait for a beta (and compilable) version of the Ensonique PCI driver -- or maybe purchase the full version of OSS. Has anybody found that RealAudio suddenly springs into life after installing the $20 version of OSS? Maybe the problems some of us are having are due to using the shareware version. Pfenning-wise and pound foolish. -- Glenn -- -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

I gave up on the OSS which came with SuSE 5.2 due to RealAudio, and
compiled sound in the kernel (for an SB AWE32 PnP) and this solved my
problems 100%. However, to answer your question, there is one regular
here (I've forgotten his name) who has purchased the latest $20 release
of OSS (version 3.9_ I believe, doing this from memory), and says that
RealAudio 5.0 works just fine for him.

I'd assume the patch is ... strange. The author probably recompiled his kernel in between with different options or something ... so look at the patch where modversions.h is patched. Probably the patch can do well without any changes to modversions.h ... it's mostly #include's of linux/modules/... here and a few #define's & co, no code. -Wolfgang -- PGP 2 welcome: Mail me, subject "send PGP-key".
