[opensuse] Viewing .avi files
Hello list, Can anyone here tell me which program/codec I need in order to be able to view .avi files (short video sequences I shot with a small point-and-shoot Samsung digital camera). I tried with Kaffeine, MPlayer, RealPlayer and Xine, with no success. And I have the "windows codecs" installed. A "file" on one of the .avi files says this: -------------------------<cut>-------------------------- $ file s1050253.avi s1050253.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 800 x 592, 20.00 fps, video: XviD, audio: ADPCM (mono, 22050 Hz) -------------------------<cut>-------------------------- As an extra, if you know how I can convert that to something that would play on a living-room DVD player, that's even better ;-) TIA Ph. I use VLC to play .avi files (which is free). I use Visual Hub to convert file formats (which is not free). -- Tony Alfrey tonyalfrey@earthlink.net "I'd Rather Be Sailing" -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

And I use avidemux-gtk which is free, -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

A "file" on one of the .avi files says this:
As tony mentioned, vlc will be good to view. I'm surprised you can't see them in Kaffeine or the other players.
As an extra, if you know how I can convert that to something that would play on a living-room DVD player, that's even better ;-)
I use the KDE DVD Author Wizard to collect them and create them into a DVD-readable format. Some had mentioned that one could simply copy the files to a DVD and play them. I tried that and ended up with a new coaster for my coffee table. -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Add packman and videolan to your install sources and update or install your Kaffeine, MPlayer, Xine, Gxine, VLC packages to the ones from packman and videolan, finally install libdvdcss (if not done automatically). Then you can view your avi files with all of those programs, which you'll prefer is just a matter of taste.
