I'm sure there are some OSS search engines that can run on your server, but I don't know any specifics. Both Google and Altavista allow you to add a button to you site that allows your one site to be indexed. i.e. You add a button to www.xyz.com that allows the whole www.xyz.com site to be indexed. They may even allow all of *.xyz.com to be indexed. http://www.altavista.com/sites/search/free_searchbox http://www.google.com/services/free.html With the above, I believe your users will get banner ads, but there is no cost. FInally, both Altavista (AVS) and Google sell search engines that run on your server, and can be highly customized. I have never used the Google one, but I have used AVS extensively. AVS is targeted at very large indexes. For instance, I used to run Siemens web search, and we had several hundred thousand web pages in the index from hundreds of Siemens owned webservers around the world. i.e goto http://search.siemens.com and search for *. I just found 295,022 pages in their index. I think entry level for AVS is $5K or so. For a large index like Siemens, it can easily get to the $100K price range. My company is a AVS resellor if your interested in going that way. We also do AVS consulting.
