Thanks for staying with it Geoff
esound was installed, but I found that esound-develop wasn't, so I installed it and that killed the errors.
Glad I could help.
The command to start is firestarter, but nothing happened. So in windows style
I rebooted and it ran. I thought that wasn't necessary in Linux.
It is true that it is almost never necessary to reboot. It is, however, sometimes necessary to stop and restart a particular daemon/service before some change you have made which affects it will come into operation. It is one of the joys of linux that almost any part of the running system can be shut down, tinkered with, and restarted in this way. It is one of the frustrations of linux that the commands for doing this are not (so far as I know), well documented. A typical example is Samba - "sbin/init.d/smb start" and "sbin/init.d/smb stop" do the trick. There are many of these command pairs, - I suspect that you needed a networking one, but I don't know which. In my opinion it would make an excellent addition to the sysadmin section of the intended unofficial SuSE faq if starting an stopping things could be covered. Absolutly, the FAQ should mention that most of these in SuSE can be started restarted etc via "rcservicename". for example sendmail can be stopped via this command: rcsendmail stop Then started with: rcsendmail start If you just do rcsendmail it will list the options too. Obviously this is just an example using sendmail as there are others. Linux software is pretty modular, which is another reason its so cool. Matt
