I was just doing some installation and I had two comments to make. 1. ftp site package version inconsistence I think it would be helpful if SuSE in some way improves the way they handle the ftp structure. There are numerous files in /pub/suse/i386/7.1/suse/xxx/* which are newer than their counterparts in /pub/suse/i386/update/7.1/xxx/* I know you can always do F2 but it gets kind to become a chore with 100 packages to compare. I know I proposed this before but I wish the "update" directory was below the original 7.1 directory and then each time an update was created the original package was replaced by a link to the updated latest one. Another thing is that mirrors carry a lot more baggage than suse.com Check out ftp1.sourceforge.net's KDE2/update_for_7.1/k2de1/RPM directory and you know what I mean. I rsync their mirror and boy it seems to be wasting a gig by now. 2. booting a hard drive from floppy or CD I got two harddrives. Each has a separate SuSE 7.1 installation on them in the same machine. I was just doing some switching back and forth to achieve this. I had a floppy boot image on CD to boot from CD into the hard drives. hard drive 2 had 2.2.18 and 2.4.2 kernels on it. I chose to boot /dev/hdb3 and it booted up fine except with a few errors for not finding a network card module. I noticed it booted into 2.2.18 even though I use through LILO 2.4.2 This means when booting from floppy or CD into booting of a hard drive it will always pick /boot/vmlinuz. It would be nice if one could specify the boot image /boot/vmlinuz_24 to be used and not only the root partition /dev/hdb3 location. Nothing big but I think small pointers to improve things. mk _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
