How to install packages (not newbie)
i just install suse 7.3, great system. but i don't know how to install new packages through FTP using Yast2. when i go to "Software/ change source of installation" then i choose the "Network" option: for ip i put: ftp.suse.com for Directory on the server: /pub/suse/i386/current it gives me an error: no route to host but this same configuration works fine for Yast. so how can i install packages using FTP with Yast2? also, not all the packages with yast are updated, for example mozilla is still 9.4. where can i get new suse packages? also, are Suse supports RPMs, does that mean i can get packages that are made for RedHat and install them on Suse without problems, if not what are the conditions? please replay to my email too. Thanx ______________________________________________________ Send your holiday cheer with http://greetings.yahoo.ca

If it works fine for YAST, what's the reason for needing YAST2?

It's in a directory projects/mozilla somewhere in the directory tree.

RedHat RPMs often place things in the wrong directory or look for dependencies in the wrong directories. Sometimes they work, sometimes they do not. It's always better to try to find a SuSE rpm. (Sometimes the SuSE rpms are easier to get than the Red Hat ones, I had a pleasant surprise when trying to update Xine with that. :-) )

where do i get the latest suse rpms? is there a central place for them? ______________________________________________________ Send your holiday cheer with http://greetings.yahoo.ca
go to:
ftp.suse.com/pub/suse
and navigate from there.
the german site is:
ftp.suse.de/pub/suse
the updates are in your architecture (i386), then select updates and your version of SuSe.
Updates to kde and gnome are in the supplementart directory at the base for your
architecture.

but yast refuses to connect to any other directory
other than /pub/suse/i386/current. when i tried to
connect to /pub/suse/i386/update/7.3 it didn't
connect. that means i have to look for the rpms
manually which is hard and doesn't resolve
dependancies. how do you update your packages?

Well, luckily a lot of times there are no dependencies; and anything that has dependencies from the SuSE mirrors has dependencies that are resolveable with files findable on the same site. That's as good as it gets with rpm. Apt-get, the other Linux package management sysem that resolves dependencies on the fly, doesn't have those problems but it has others (the biggest one being that it's part of Debian. ;-) ) Luckily, I bought SuSE 7.3 Professional when I upgraded from Personal so I don't have to worry anymore about the vageries of downloading most of the packages I need, a pain at 56kbps; except updates which are downloadable with YAST Online Update. :-) I noticed now I can even upgrade KDE with online update, the sort of thing you really need a fancy package manager for. Thanks SuSE! :-)
Where would one be able to get apt-get for an rpm distro (e.g. SuSE)? TIA Curtis :) On Sunday 23 December 2001 17:51, Joshua Lee wrote:

There's none yet for SuSE; there's one for Connectiva and an unofficial one for Red Hat that just began a month or so ago. However, one should note that apt-get for rpms doesn't work as smoothly as it does for debs.
For suse you need to create your own repository. In this respect there are 2 resources that you need, harddisk space and bandwith (or enough patience). The repository can be made with the tool(s) at http://apt4rpm.sf.net. At the same site, you find references to apt-rpm, recent cvs build just fine (with the spec file for suse that you find at http://apt4rpm.sf.net (it's in the cvs repository under misc). I don't know where your coming from saying you don't have the update problem in Suse 7.3 pro. I have Suse 7.3 pro and I also cannot update using YaST2 (online update) for anything except system updates, meaning apps (kde, gnome, etc.) cannot be updated through there. I also cannot change the directory path. Fortunately though rpm -U works just fine so this minor inconvenience is easily overlooked for me... :) Where would one be able to get apt-get for an rpm distro (e.g. SuSE)? Oh, you meant updating the packages that are not supported in YAST2. Of course, it won't update them; though it *will* update KDE now. :-) Plain YAST, the text-based one, will install any rpms, but it is little more than a shell to rpm and suseconfig.
