I had no problems with this on any other of the computers, but for some reason i cannot start OpenOffice 1.0.1 with suse 8.1 on this PC. If I click the icon, or do "soffice" nothing happens. However, if I do /opt/openoffice.org/program/setup then I get a "Segmentation fault" error. Openoffice.org had a fix for S3 drivers quite some time ago to add "export SAL_DO_NOT_USE_INVERT50=true" to the environment settings to fix this similar error. I have an nVidia GForce 2 GTS, but I tried it anyway with no luck. I am using the nVidia driver version 1.0-3123. I have also tried to uninstall/reinstall OpenOffice also, but that didnt help either. I don't know how to tell if it is a video, X, or OO problem :( Any ideas? I really need to use OO. Thanks Jeric
Hi If You start OO "soffice" from a terminal window, does it give You any reason why it is not working? Seg-fault with "setup" is very strange... Have You run the "install" as root?? Jaska. On Wednesday 16 October 2002 10:54, Jeric wrote:

Thanks for your response. Yes, I have tried it from a terminal window. "soffice" from terminal produces no error, either as root or as user, just a 3-8 second pause. "setup" produces error (segfault) as user and root from terminal. jeric
Hi Some time ago I found with SuSE 6.3 that if I had not installed Java, StarOffice 5.2 would have the same behavior. As OO is based on StarOffice, it might not work without any Java... Maybe this is way off, but have You Java installed? Jaska. On Wednesday 16 October 2002 11:42, Jeric wrote:

Thanks for the response. Yes, I have java sdk and jre (suse 8.1 packages) installed. I just tried to install the kde3bindings-java package (just in case) but it didn't help any. Was there a special java package that you used? Or was it just the jre/jdk packages? Jeric
Hi The Java that I installed was the "standard" SuSE 6.3 Java runtime kit.. I don't remember what the correct name was anymore. I tried to install OO in my SuSE 8.0, and it installed okay.. It did not see any java-packages when installing, so I'm not sure if OO does even need Java installed. I'm sorry that I can't help You any further, becaus I'm not familiar with OO installation problems. Jaska. On Wednesday 16 October 2002 12:04, Jeric wrote:

I had a similar problem with openoffice. I found out that was a hardware problem. Check with memtest86 and with the test script you could find in the Suse Database. Praise

I did not say in my previous mail because I was looking for it. I have found it at: http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/hmeyer_memtest-sig11.html Praise

Thank you all for your advise, as a hardware fault seemed to be the most common problem with such an error, which is something I didn't consider. After 48 hours of testing my hardware with memtest and the script that was offered (that scripts homepage offered alot of info, too!) However, it turns out to end up being some kind of conflict/dependency issue with the software. Using SuSE 8.1, this is what I had to do to fix the "segmentation fault" on OO's setup (in case anyone else has this issue): I first tried to compile it from source and found that the following components where lacking and had to be installed: -STLport -Pam-dev -Bison -JDK (I already had that one installed, but it's not part of 8.1 default) -Flex -Jakarta-Ant -dmake (yes, I know most of the above are only for compiling, but I don't know which one actually helped, or if they were all needed anyway...maybe someone else knows?) So, after installing all of the above from the suse 8.1 cd (except for dmake, which was downloaded), I tried to build OO as per the web site instructions. However, due to a known issue with $SOURCEROOT/selenv/inc/target.mk I could not finish it, and couldn't figure out which of the 5 patches actually fixed it properly (and I was too fustrated at this point to figure it out). So, I removed that and reinstalled the OpenOffice from the 8.1 CD. As normal user and root in KDE (yes, I logged into KDE as root, which is bad, but I needed to try it) I received the same segfault error both times (using "/opt/OpenOffice.org/program/setup"). So, as normal user logged into root I executed the following to make it work: xhost +localhost su export DISPLAY=localhost:0 /opt/OpenOffice.org/program/setup *setup began!* exit xhost -localhost Then I clicked the openoffice icon on the desktop, and everything worked! I know what the xhost +localhost does, but I don't know why it worked this way, but not when logged into KDE as root, or why setup had to be installed as root first, before the user. Especially since my laptop did not require this (maybe security permissions? I /might/ have set the security from "easy local" to "secure local" before executing setup on the desktop, but not on the laptop...not sure on that) Anyway, hope that helps others if they have the same problem.

This will sound strange, but I had the same problem as you and found out that OpenOffice.org really doesn't like the fact that I put panels on the sides of my desktop. I had to move my panel to the bottom, and my kasbar to the top, or it would segfault. No, it doesn't make sense.
