linux compatible out-of-the box pc?
I've given up on getting my hp pavilion with the combo audio/modem card to work on linux. Which pc's are linux compatible out of the box? Are there drivers for any flat screen displays?
There is a certification list on suse.de...sorry do not remember where, try in the support area. I remember seeing several Compaq systems and others. The Flatscreen should not be a problem generally speaking. I have used several of the common ones with SuSE 7.x Regards, Jon On Wed, 6 Jun 2001, jennifer moter wrote:

Unless you must have something put together by the big guys I'd suggest going white box. It's not too hard to come up with a list of parts that are all linux compatible and have a machine built to spec. Around here it would cost less. I never trust the big makers to not change something in the middle of a production run. Nick

I decided to get one preinstalled with Linux, so I was sure all the hardware would work with the OS. I got an Altura from Pogo (http://www.pogolinux.com/), but there are several other good choices, like VA Linux Systems (http://www.valinux.com/). Pogo doesn't have much of a selection of distributions, though, so I installed SuSE immediately after I got it. Daniel

Most do not have a great selection of OS's to install, although I'd like a Penguin Computing computer if I could afford one. But, I am the trickle upgrade person :-). Matt

I recommend Dell. I've received extremely good service on their products, and everything you can expect to work works. Just make sure to choose the non-integrated options on the Dimension L series or go for the slightly more expensive 4100 series. Not all of their components work in Linux, but most of their systems have available options to insure 100% Linux compatability. I think you will also find feature-per-feature that Dell will generally be cheaper than any major competitor or even Mom 'n Pop shops. Finally, for anyone considering a laptop - Dell's laptops work well in Linux too. :-) -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Matt I know they wont support an OS they didn't preinstall but you should be able to add Suse without removing redhat and still get support. And you have to admit its pretty nice being able to call up someone at 3 in the morning to trouble shoot something on your system. True, 24/7 support is nice :-). But its still annoying about having to have RH on the system...But its the same with VA and most others, the best you'd ever get is marginal support. When I worked 24/7 support from Demon, ack that sucked. Only got two types of people calling an ISP during the haunting hours: 1. Weirdo's 2. Web designers. Thats all I ever got then :-). Matt

If it's a home machine then normal business hours are pretty useless for many people. The other thing is timezones. Midnight EST is what 9pm on the west coast? Personally I've never had anything break during normal hours. It always seems to happen five minutes after closing time-( Nick

I have a Dell that came with Red Hat preloaded. I subsequently wiped it out when I installed SuSE 6.4. Now my Dell computer has several mechanical things wrong with it. I won't recite the list of woes but do you think I have voided the warranty? If so I am just going to get it repaired on my own. Personally, I have not been very happy with Dell. I think their computers are pretty sloppy. -- Cheers, Jonathan

Best to give them a call and ask...They *should* cover the hardware. I juts happen to like Penguin, even if they want to make money :-). Would they let you open up the box and try to troubleshoot it yourself, or again would that void anything? Remember, Dell will not burn in components, even if its brand new type of hardware (as we know rev 1 hardware can be flaky). You may also have had a jinxed, although they should have offered to take it back if its causing too many woes. Matt
Well our server came with software and hardware warranty options - we just
took the hardware one, since we ordered without an installed o/s
Apart from burning out the monitor by using wrong frequency settings (which
I've never actually heard of anyone doing) I don't see how the o/s you use
could affect any hardware warranty.

I had a Dell once. Worked quite well. But never try to upgrade anything or you're in trouble. The motherboard would only work with two certified SDRAM modules (try to find these 2 years after bying the machine...). I finally found a shop that had these modules---for 2.5 times the price a normal one would have cost. Then I wanted to build in a new motherborad. I got an Asus P5?, built it in and everything fit nicely---until I wanted to connect the cables for the on/off switch, reset, and the LEDs on the tower's front. Dell doesn't use the standard cables everyone else uses, no they have cables that only fit on their cases, so I had to buy a new tower :-( Ciao, Stefan -- Stefan Troeger o _ _ _ stefan@troeger.st __o __o /\_ _ \\o (_)\__/o (_) _`\<, _`\<, _>(_) (_)/<_ \_| \ _|/' \/ (_)/(_) (_)/(_) (_) (_) (_) (_)' _\o_

Check out www.affordablecomputers.com/custombuilds/aci_linthun They're local to me, so I've dealt with them across the counter, but you can also configure a system over the web. They've checked the hardware compatibility for you, and will even pre-load your choice of linux distribution, including SuSE 7.1 -- Rick Green "I have the heart of a little child, and the brain of a genius. ... and I keep them in a jar under my bed"

Those in the UK may want to consider GND. I have bought linux compatible systems from them with SuSE preloaded. See http://www.gnd.com Eddie
