Re: [opensuse] turning off/on compiz fusion
Hmm, sounds like compiz is still running but your window
decorator causes the trouble maybe ? I've had problems
getting it all working out of the box (fresh install). It
kept on starting compiz without windows borders, which seems
to happen quite often. Only got it working after some
un-reproducable fiddling around.
But did you follow all instructions on
http://en.opensuse.org/Compiz_Fusion carefully ? Which
version of XGL and which software update repositories are
you using ?
Cheers,
Diego

Hi,
For me it does the same as turning off the compiz fusion icon, and restarting the computer as suggested here before, but then my windows don't have their borders and I think it still eats some resources.
Thanks anyway, I guess I'm coming to the point of uninstalling it. Anyways I have already impressed everybody around :-)

Hi Diego, Well, basically I installed it via one click install from the same page, and it added the repos there. (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/openSUSE_10.3/) the thing is that, when I start the compiz fusion icon, the borders come up and everything is fine, but if I change the Window manager to KWin, they dissapear again. the video card is Intel something, I remember there were an issues with that (I couldn't install compiz earlier on 10.2 I believe), probably that is the reason. Many thanks, Sergey -- Sergey Mkrtchyan, PhD Student @ Department of Physics & Astronomy, Faculty of Science, University of Waterloo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I've fallen and I can't get up. I think I borked my Compiz / package / version info in the local package database. I've been through the guidelines I can find on line & I'm lost. Would appreciate some guidance on how to undo the muddle. * What's a good plan for un-borking this before I ignorantly flail around some more? * What are these YAST dependency errors telling me? Is there a "what this means" guide somewhere I'm not finding? * Is there somewhere I haven't found yet that explains all this? Current state: * Clean install of OpenSuSE 10.3, all patches / updates accepted to date. * YAST reports all the compiz-related packages are absent. * Repositories enables are; Main (OSS), Main (NON-OSS), NVIDIA & Main Update * I deleted zypp.db after getting down to only those four repositories, to force a rebuild of that database. * Attempting to install with one-click in the current state generates a boatload of dependency errors starting with this (entire error set is at the bottom of this message): Cannot install compiz-fusion-plugins-extra, because it is conflicting with compiz-fusion-plugins-main A conflict over compiz-fusion-plugins-git (compiz-fusion-plugins-git) requires the removal of compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-0.6.9_git080208-1.1.i586[X11:XGL] which is scheduled for installation === compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-0.6.9_git080208-1.1.i586[X11:XGL] === compiz-fusion-plugins-extra-0.6.9_git080208-1.1.i586[X11:XGL] will be installed by another application. Origins: Following the online instructions at OpenSuSE.org I ran an install of the Compiz-related packages via YAST with Pacman and KDE-community repositories - left over from installing rich media, and I gotta-have me my K-eyes. That install produced Compiz "kinda" working - wouldn't auto-start, bunch of sketchy messages on launch, turning it off thereafter leaves window decoration partially Compiz, partially not. When I realized what I'd done, I backed out the packages & and attempted install via one-click with just the SuSE repositories enabled. When that didn't work I followed the suggestions to delete zypp.db, to force it to rebuild. No joy. I have installed Compiz successfully via one-click on a separate TEST partition. Works great. Never did install DVD or KEyes on TEST, which got it out of synch with my working partition, kind of defeating the purpose of the test install. Dumb of me. Help appreciated. I'm glad to write up the solution in n00b-friendly form - I've been looking for ways to contribute. Then I tried blowing away the zypp.db to force a rebuild *after* the remove step. Still no joy. I turned on the "expert mode" in "One Click Install" to see more of what it is doing. It listed two repositories, "X11" and "Standard", with the warning ". . . will remain subscribed after the install." The "Standard" repository *was not* selected. Selected it. Now get 5 dependency errors vs. the 24 previously. Aborted the install, but interesting . . . Where is a reference on what this dependency info means?
