Either I have something set up wrong or really I'm doing something wrong ... and I don't see what. I'm trying to use info in the Unofficial SuSE FAQ (good document) to fix a problem (SuSE 8.1). It tells me to go to Yast2->System->Editor for /etc/sysconfig modules and "Select Base-Administration->Common-Basics->initrd_modules". It lists items to add, but... When I do this (in root mode ... I don't think it's possible to get here without root mode ... I don't see any way to change things. The form has a combo box at the top with one item in it. The combo box is write enabled, but I don't want to delete a module (even if I could) or replace the one module listed (aic7xxx reiserfs ide-scsi). There aren't any buttons that indicate "Add" or any type of change operation. There isn't a text box that lists items that I could use to enter data. What am I missing. How do I use the editor to edit? -- Penguins eat butterflies, don't they?
Hi Michael, I think that you didn't install the YaST module to edit the sysconfig. Enter in YaST, Install or Remove Packages and search the word yast. In the list, search the option refer a sysconfig. ===== ================================ Rodrigo Nascimento (0x005f) WebSphere Administrator ================================ The tux works and don't doubt this ================================ _______________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! This sounded like it was going to be the fix, but when I go to Yast2->Install Or Remove Software, I see that yast->sysconfig is already installed. It's got to be something else. Can you think of anything else I might be missing?

You have to know the module name you want to add ( though your request sounds like a good feature request) So what you are doing is correct as I see it -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

I do (it's in the FAQ). I just don't see any way to add it. I think Rodrigo gave me the answer, though. Install problem on Yast2. I'll be checking that momentarily. -- Penguins eat butterflies, don't they?

This is a side effect of mistaken expectations :) Yes, it is a combo box, and pressing the "down arrow" shows (usually) the same thing, or in some cases the list of legal choices [not always, however...] What *ISN'T* obvious is that you can simply "start typing" in the main box and when you're done, move on to the next field [in effect, "update" is implied]
but I don't want to delete a module (even if I could) or replace the one module listed (aic7xxx reiserfs ide-scsi).
Actually, that is three modules: aic7xxx -- the SCSI driver for Adaptec series cards reiserfs -- the file system ide-scsi -- a SCSI emulator/driver to enable CD-writer programs that expect SCSI devices to "talk to" IDE devices simply add whatever additional modules (seperated by spaces) on this line. Alternatively, you can go into the directory /etc/sysconfig, find the file that contains this "setting", and edit the file in vi/emacs/notepad/whatever [basically, the "sysconfig editor" reads the file and parses out the "comment" blocks to provide you with some general guideline text -- most of the time it works out, but occaisionally is screws up royally -- for instance, take a look at the apache modules setting [if you've installed apache, that is] -- turns out "in the settings file" someone has placed some "ascii-art" in the comment block for the word "modules". Looks cool in a standard text editor, but totally bogus in the sysconfig editor...] If you edit this by hand, you need to remember to "run" the program that actually reads/parses these files and makes the actual settings in various /etc/xxx.conf files. If you've only changed one item, this can be simplified: SuSEconfig --module <whatever> [which, for your particular case, is the file /etc/sysconfig/kernel, and the corresponding update command would be "SuSEconfig --module kernel"] - -- Yet another Blog: http://osnut.homelinux.net -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) Comment: http://osnut.homelinux.net/TomEmerson.asc iD8DBQE+lVCZV/YHUqq2SwsRAobUAJ9i+l3WATa+EQV/C1JLZ9s6DAf8bACeMO9m riBgrxYU+diz9HXixaxfcpU= =Wt/0 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

THANK YOU!!!!! You were absolutely right - I was looking for the wrong thing in the right place. Strangely, I think that what is actually here is as logical as what I was looking for. It depends on what you're looking for.
aic7xxx -- the SCSI driver for Adaptec series cards reiserfs -- the file system ide-scsi -- a SCSI emulator/driver to enable CD-writer programs that expect SCSI devices to "talk to" IDE devices
This is the part that made it obvious what was happening. How could I be so dumb? -- Penguins eat butterflies, don't they?
