[opensuse] OpenSuse 12.1 - Network hanging at boot time
Hi, I did a fresh install of OpenSuse 12.1 on a Dell PowerEdge 1900, after thed I used the Yast ad made a full update. On this machine we have two e1000 cards being detected as eth0 and eth1 and a Broadcom NetXtreme as eth2. During the boot, after making the fdisk the system is hanging for about 5 minutes, I changed the initdefault value from level 5 to 3 to be able to check what was going on. I could see that the network initialization is hanging, I even deleted the Vlan configuration but the issue remains. Below are some entries I could find on the log: Feb 22 16:50:12 zeus network[811]: ..done eth0 device: Intel Corporation 82572EI Gigabit Ethernet Co Feb 22 16:50:12 zeus ifup: eth0 device: Intel Corporation 82572EI Gigabit Ethernet Co Feb 22 16:50:12 zeus kernel: [ 12.669859] e1000e 0000:07:00.0: irq 72 for MSI/MSI-X Feb 22 16:50:12 zeus kernel: [ 12.722335] e1000e 0000:07:00.0: irq 72 for MSI/MSI-X Feb 22 16:50:12 zeus kernel: [ 12.724000] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready Feb 22 16:50:12 zeus ifup: eth0 Feb 22 16:50:12 zeus ifup: IP address: 172.31.0.22/24 Feb 22 16:50:12 zeus network[811]: eth0 IP address: 172.31.0.22/24 Feb 22 16:50:12 zeus ifup: Feb 22 16:50:12 zeus avahi-daemon[877]: Joining mDNS multicast group on interface eth0.IPv4 with address 172.31.0.22. 12.3 is not yet released, and 12.1 is still supported. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Yes, I m not implying it was released or that 12.1 was unsupported. What I am indeed implying that if there is a bug, it might have been fixed already or if not, there is a possibility of getting it fixed. and that the chances of getting 12.1 fixed now are as slim as the possibility of a meteorite falling in your backyard. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I installed the old version because I wanted all my server with the same version.
I downloaded the file openSUSE-12.3-DVD-Build0024-x86_64.iso and installed it.
If you can reproduce with a recent version, please fill a bug report.
It looks like the thing got worse with the new version. None of the network cards get configured. I took a look at the Yast configuration and the interfaces are configured there, also the method of start is the traditional ifup. When I tried do start running manually "/etc/int.d/network restart" the command got redirected to the systemctl command and the interfaces were kept not configured. https://www.box.com/s/4dzaqqqc74ybnsl2o8it Another weird thing I noticed while dealing with Yast was the default run level is not showed on the Yast advanced service configuration window https://www.box.com/s/1bxasu6tqjzce59no699 I took a look at the /etc/inittab file (that usually have lots of lines) and for my surprise the content of the files was just: id:5:initdefault: Did I download the wrong ISO? A'm I missing something? I'll try to reinstall the system with the default options, not touching anything on the software options, and see what happens. systemd does not have notion of runlevels. So it shows "B" only for legacy /etc/init.d/boot.* services.

Tank you very mucho for pointing this.

I'll have to start learning about the systemd mechanism, and wait the version 12.3 get ready. By the way. I installed the version 12.1 again and before doing any update I checked and the system is booting without any hanging issue. I think it was due some weird update I have done on the previous installation. Your system is using networkmanger according to the screenshot.

"runlevel" is a legacy concept, systemd does not have runlevels but "targets"

No, the iso is right. systemd does not (and will not) use /etc/inittab. To change the default target : ln -sf /usr/lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target --> will switch the default target to the rough equivalent of the old "runlevel 3" ln -sf /usr/lib/systemd/system/graphical.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target --> will switch the default to "runlevel 5"-like A "target" is not at all the same thing as a runlevel but in practice can be used interchangeably. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
