Hello list,
Did a fresh install to a new drive and I my machine beeps once at me about every
20 minutes. /var/log/messages shows a bunch of "-MARK-" entries. How do I
stop this annoyance? Thanks

man syslogd: -m interval The syslogd logs a mark timestamp regularly. The default interval between two -- MARK -- lines is 20 minutes. This can be changed with this option. Setting the interval to zero turns it off entirely. I hope it helps. Avi TRBishop wrote:

Thankyou, Avi. Is it possible I've never had syslogd running before? Does it need to be running? With all the installs I've done I've never been beeped at after installation. Just curious. Would this also be what is giving me the message "disk change detected"? Thanks again.

Oh, no, you have it running all right since this is the program that generates the --MARK-- messages and is used by all other programs that emit data to the system log. If you do 'ps xa' from the command line you will see it running. Avi TRBishop wrote:

OK, I've gotten syslogd under control w/ -m 0, but just for the sake of anyone else w/ a beeping box, it was not just syslogd but also the idled daemon, so apparently I was getting beeped at every 20 min. and every 2 min. (thought it seemed quicker than 20 min.) Anyway, it has been turned off through Yast ->Configuration file->start idled->no way! Thanks again. On Sat, 12 Aug 2000, Avi Schwartz wrote:
