RE: Failure to install SuSe 9.0 on Sony Vaio (glibc-2.3.2-88.i686 failed) - FIXED!
Thanks to Rüdiger Meier for the solution to this one. The trick was to mount over the i686 file, which RPM was erroneously finding, and replace it with the functional i586 version, as he describes below. Cheers again Rüdiger. Hallo, Am Mittwoch, 5.

Mounte doch einfach "etwas anderes" dorthin.

My installation of SuSe 9.0 on a Sony Vaio fails with the error messages at the base of this email.
Yast2 attempts to (via RPM) install the following package:
/var/adm/YaST/InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x00000001/MEDIA/suse/i68 6/glibc-2.3.2-88.i686.rpm
When it should (clearly) be trying to install this one:
/var/adm/YaST/InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x00000001/MEDIA/suse/i58 6/glibc-2.3.2-87.i586.rpm
In the i686 directory there is just this _single_ file. The rest of the installation appears to be in the i586 directory, which is clearly the one Yast2 should be using.
I guess the question is how do I affect the installation such that this i686 directory is unreadable, given that it resides on a 'Read-Only' filesystem, the CDRom.
Good question, huh?
I've got a root window open behind the installation, but clearly modifying the CD is a problem, does anyone know of a way to circumvent this behaviour, please?
TIA for any helpful suggestions.
And if SuSe Installation Support would look at this, I would be grateful...

Further to this I have investigated the media at point of failure and have found 2 glibc packages:
/var/adm/YaST/InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x00000001/MEDIA/suse/i58 6/glibc-2.3.2-87.i586.rpm
and
/var/adm/YaST/InstSrcManager/IS_CACHE_0x00000001/MEDIA/suse/i68 6/glibc-2.3.2-88.i686.rpm
Presumably i686 is used because 'i686' is returned by the command:
uname -m
Which doesn't explain why the earlier i586 packages were installed though.

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-C1MGP running SuSe 8.0 and have been trying unsuccesfully to install 9.0.
It fails with the following message:
Installation of package glibc-2.3.2-88.i686 failed.
Details are:
filesystem-9.0-6.i586.rpm installed ok suse-release-9.0-6.i586.rpm installed ok aaa_skel-2003.9.18-4.i586.rpm installed ok glibc-2.3.2-88.i686.rpm failed
rpm output:
package glibc-2.3.2-88 is intended for a i686 architecture
So I'm stuffed - unless anyone can think of a solution, please?
ps. I'll try and get a German version of some of this written out for the main list shortly.
Meanwhile any helpful suggestions appreciated.
TIA
