[SLE] Leaving `/usr/local' alone [was: OSS sound after 6.4 upgrade]

Please, please, SuSE, leave `/usr/local/' alone. _Nothing_ (besides the directory structure, maybe?) from the CD-ROM should install in `/usr/local'. I know that, at least for Apache, you are waiting for some mighty decision from the committee of all Linux packagers (decision which might be slooow to come). But in the meantime, please make every effort to not put anything new in `/usr/local', and rather use every opportunity to empty it. -- François Pinard http://www.iro.umontreal.ca/~pinard -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

As far as I know OSS is installed in /tmp/oss-... and that is all that SuSE does. In there you run oss-install, provided by the creators of OSS. That script allows you to select where to install it. At the end the script makes links for sound[on|off|conf] in /usr/local/bin. I don't see what is the problem there. OSS is a commercial package, it's not part of the standard OS and may well be installed whole in /usr/local. -- Rafael Herrera Laboratory for Computational Neuroscience University of Pittsburgh http://www.neuronet.pitt.edu/~raffo -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Apache installs by default into /usr/local as do a number of packages I have download from the net. SuSE puts bits in /usr/local and bits in /etc/httpd and bits in /usr/sbin ... and this is supposed to be a good thing? Whatever is decided, it'd be so nice if everyone could decide on where everything it to be put, and just put it there.. Chris On 29 Apr 2000 08:30:57 -0400, Franois Pinard wrote:
