You will need to load different font; it is normally per-VT, so it should not affect other users. Look in /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts for available fonts. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Thank you, setfont /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/<font> is just what I was looking for. fyi: Even with a 12x22 font there are 80 lines on the console! Greg -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

There they live, but how does one apply one from there after booting has finished? -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." After booting, is there a way to adjust the console font size? What console? Does the desktop make a difference? I am still struggling to learn the unix way of doing things, so I don't know if it matters whether you're using KDE or Gnome. There they live, but how does one apply one from there after booting has finished? Isn't there usually a configuration file for each console in each user's home directory? I am thinking, e.g., of '.bashrc' for bash (I found one in my home directory, but haven't found one for 'root', and want to edit it to add a couple aliases I find handy).
I have not figured out how to do this for XTerm, and as it's font is too small and thin, I can't use it because I can't read it without putting my nose a couple cm from the screen. I use Konsole, and once I start it, there is a menu at the top, which includes 'Settings'. I select the 'edit Current Profile', and can change the font and it's size on the Appearance tab. Using that, I set the font to bold 12 point, and can now read the contents of that console without eye-strain. Or am I way off base? Are you talking about these consoles or something completely different? Ted, at a high level there are 2 user interfaces with linux: console X-Windows (That includes KDE / Gnome / XFCE / etc.) The console is a pure text only display such as was common on computers in the early 70's. If your openSUSE box is booting straight to X (like most do), you have enter control-alt-F2 to get to VT2. (VT == virtual terminal) VT2 is the second virtual terminal on the PC. I use it a lot. control-alt-F1 will get you to VT1. VT1 is where boot messages and other things go. I tend to not use it much once booting finishes. VT7 is by default where X runs, but you can have it on VT8, etc. If you are already on a text console, a simple alt-F1, etc. will take you to VT1. If you are on a X based VT, you have to use control-alt-F# to move to a new VT. You should take a quick run through all 12 VTs, just so you know they exist. On my PC VT1-VT6 are text consoles. VT7 is X. VT8 and VT9 are blank. VT10 is a running tail -f /var/log/messages I think (not sure about that). VT11 and VT12 are blank. Felix, login into one of the VTs, then type: setfont /usr/share/kbd/consolefonts/iso01-12x22.psfu.gz That is the command I used that make the font big enough on the Mac Book Pro for me to read it. It only impacted the current VT. setfont takes other args, but I didn't experiment with it.
