All sorts of woes after 9.0 installation
Hi, As the Subject says, I've been using SuSE since 7.0 (or so) and regularly just upgrade rather than make a fresh install but this time when I did that chaos erupted. So, hoping that I would have better luck if I just started fresh, I re-installed 9.0 fresh. Things are no better. (Oh, I have also updated all of the files available through YOU. Well, all except the kernel which YOU has not been able to download. Things are, again, not improved. I also managed, somehow, to get the nVidia drivers installed. Still no improvement.) The situation: Basically the system just decides to reboot for no apparent reason or, it locks up tight as a drum and I have to actually pull the plug or, or it locks but not quite as tight and my on-off switch will work to turn off the 'chine. All of this is after sometimes five minutes of use. (Sometimes considerably longer. Usually if I just turned on YOU and let it operate without my doing anything else [at all -- like I went into the other room and watched the television] then things would precede okay for a good time.) (Some of this stuff is actually kinda funny. Whenever I try to open KMail the entire system spontaneously reboots, immediately. It sure doesn't want me to use KMail.) I've always loved SuSE and never had anything like this. So, A) are others having similar problems with SuSE v9.0? B) anyone out there have any ideas? I'm using a no-name Pentium 4 (3 GHz) box with an nVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics board. Other info available on request.

Sounds like hardware. Bad power supply, or memory, or cpu fan or?? Memory can do this. A power supply going south will do this too. Had it happen here. Would run for a while, and then for no reason just quit. Eventually the PS quit. No, not me.

I was thinking about something related to ACPI first, and that you'd perhaps be better off disabling it, presupposing it is enabled, but if the machine reboots when you try to start Kmail... beats me. But still, I get the feeling it's hardware related somehow. Have you tried unplugging all cards and peripherals that isn't absolutely necessary? /Lars
