[opensuse] Laptop: HP Pavillion dv8t (opinions)
I'm looking at an HP Pavillion dv8t which I'll use exclusively to run openSUSE. Core i7 Nvidia GeForce GT 230M Intel Wireless-N Card Does anyone have any experience with this machine, or the specifications [specifically the Nvidia card, which seems very new]? <http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/computer_can_series.do?storeName=computer_store&category=notebooks&a1=Category&v1=High+performance&series_name=dv8tqe_series&jumpid=in_R329_prodexp/hhoslp/psg/notebooks/High_performance/dv8tqe_series> I'm a quite experience Linux Systems Administrator, but I need something that will, at least basically, come up to speed easily so I can resume work (my former computer having suddenly died). -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I can't say anything about dv8t, but I've got a Pavilion dv9760ez right next to me - it's about two years old, and the graphics stopped working a few weeks ago. Today I took it apart, put it back together again, and voila! suddenly the graphics worked. I had forgotten a couple of tiny screws attaching the keyboard to the frame - seems to be a bad connection somewhere.
I'm a quite experience Linux Systems Administrator, but I need something that will, at least basically, come up to speed easily so I can resume work (my former computer having suddenly died).
I would buy a Lenovo. /Per -- Per Jessen, Zürich (8.4°C) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Does anyone have any experience with this machine, or the specifications [specifically the Nvidia card, which seems very ne I have an HP dv5t and my wife an HP xdh16 (x16t). My machine is about 1 1/2 yrs old and hers is about six months old. Mine has Intel graphics, hda intel sound chip and intel 5100 wifi adapter. Hers has intel core 2 duo processor, Nvidia GeForce GT 130M, hda intel audio, and intel 5300 wifi adapter. Both wifi adapters and sound cards work with the newer kernels and alsa driver. I had to get a newer kernel for my machine, my wife's worked out of the box (with the proprietary firmware). My intel graphics worked out of the box with OS 11.0 and her Nvidia card worked after I added the nvidia repo and downloaded the proprietary driver. Her microphone only worked after I did quite a bit of googling and found the settings for the particular audio chip. Her machine has a problem with suspend/hibernate which crashes x which I have not figured out yet, otherwise very happy with both machines. I have been buying only hp laptops (6 in total) since 1998 and I am fairly happy with the ease of installation and configuration with various flavors of Suse and the durability of the machines. It has gotten easier and easier to set up the hardware with each new version of Suse. !1.2 on my wife's machine was the easiest and quickest to date. Sounds like the machine you are looking at has a higher end/newer graphics card, I have no knowledge about it. Good luck with your purchase. Gustav

I ended up purchasing an HP DV7-3085DX due the fact that is was very close in specifications to the other model and a local retailer had one in stock. Installation of 64bopenSUSE 11.2 went very smoothly; everything so far: Video [including 3d], Sound, Wireless, Ethernet, USB, card reader, has "just worked". Installation was straight-forward, booted the first time, added the Nvidia repository using Yast's provided repo list, performed a "zypper up", and the next time I logged in I had hi-res 3d video running compiz. Very impressive; this was even more successful than my last install [a Toshiba P105-S6207 which also went very well, it only had some minor sound quality issues]. Kudos openSUSE, I'm back to work now.
