Hello all, I am new to Suse and relatively new to Linux. I would like to put Linux on a x386 PC. The task of this station would be : - work as a router (sharing an internet connection) for my internal LAN, - work as a firewall for my internal LAN, - work as a print server, cvs server,... for my internal LAN. Can I do it with "Suse Linux 9.0" or do I have to buy "Suse Standard Server"? If I buy Suse Standard Server, did I have to pay every year ? Thanks, Jean

SuSE 9.0 Pro is more than enough for the tasks you described. Just go for it! ;) Martin

9.0 will handle all of the tasks but Jean LEE does specify x386 or maybe the person meant x86. If the PC is a 386 I don't think that platform has been supported for some time. -- Ken Schneider unix user since 1989 linux user since 1994 SuSE user since 1998 (5.2)
Hi, Sorry, I made a mistake i have an x86 PC. What does bring "Suse linux standard server" more than "Suse linux 9.0" ? Is the "Suze linux 9.0" that we can install via ftp is the professional version ? No it is not the professional version and it ought to to for what you have in mind, providing you are looking at pentium level hardware. Mike

As it's name implies, the server version is intendend for use as a server and is tailored for that purpose. However, any version of SuSE is more than enough for what you want to do.

If you need the linux for just a router/firewall stb for an internal or home lan, I think Suse in not for you. Suse is much better for desktop usage or for corporate servers. For your task on a small, old 386 pc it's better to choose some small distro. Sorcerer, Slackware or Debian minimal install, something like that. Because you don't need all the features that Suse 9.0 or a Suse Std.Server can offer. It would be a waste of resources, disk space, etc. regards Tibor

NO to knock SuSE here, but I believe that at 9.0 you installed on a minimum pentium system. Not that this is any real problem, as there are a number of suitable down loadable candidates out there. You could look for something like SmoothWall or IPCop out on the net. Mike

Jean In the corner I have a $50 box which has an Intel Celeron 350 or so, 128 megs of ram and a 20 gig hd. It is my router , firewall, VoIP router and print server. It quietly sits there in level 3 doing its thing with 6 machines tied to it. So can you do it? The answer is a resounding sure! SuSE 9.0 /9.1 will easily do all you want it to. I use Shorewall for my firewall cause it's easy to setup and modify if you need to. I cheated a little on the setup, I hooked a keyboard and monitor onto it, installed all the software and got it going, then set it to boot into init 3 and removed the keyboard/monitor/mouse and admin the thing from my main machine via ssh. By admin I mean I occasionally ssh into it just to see if I can. Havent had to do a thing since I set it up. Shortly I will be adding a wireless router but will keep the same machine as my link/firewall to the internet. So don't be timid, go ahead and install SuSE 9.0 and its upgrades and have all the fun you can stand. ra

Any version of Linux should be able to do that. You can buy SuSE or wait for the download to be available. However, on that system, don't expect a lot of performance, particulary with the desktop running.
