Eight! Out of around 380 people. I spent the afternoon trying to find the other seven. Couldn't find even one. Oh well. SuSE must do better down here! -- Microsoft Palladium: "Where the hell do you think YOU'RE going today?"
Dear list, a new monitor made me change my old trusted X configuration, and I found myself wondering about which colour depth to use. More precisely, i was wondering whether there is any real difference between 24 bpp and 32 bpp. I have been switching between the two options for a while i cannot honestly notice any difference between them (i have a Matrox 450 and a Philips 109B as a monitor), while the difference between 16 and 24 is very noticeable indeed. So what I I wanted to know is: 1. whether a 32 bpp colour depth really makes any difference for a normal desktop user 2. whether it consumes more graphic memory: since the new monitor arrived, i have been notincing a rather sluggish behaviour of X, in particular when I move a windom around (now with my new 19 in. monitor I can do it, finally!) i noticed that the bordera are not moved as smoothly as i expected (i have 16 mb video memory). I am not quite sure, but sometimes i have the impression that redrawing is faster with a 24 bpp colour depth just a minor point, but i would be very glad if someone could enlighten me about it, and thanks a lott everibody in advance, this is indeed one of the best lists I know! fred

Color depth specifies the number of colors, bpp specifies the number of bits per pixel, don't mix them up. Can you really use color depth 32? "man XFree86" says the maximum is 24. -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se

Not to hand, although the organisers might put the poll results up on their web site. I do remember that Debian was top with about 170, and RHL was second with about 120. Mandrake had 19. -- Microsoft Palladium: "Where the hell do you think YOU'RE going today?"
