When the install was through, KDE came up with 640x480... (The system is pretty much unusable, even the KDE control center cannot be displayed correctly.)

Have you run YaST online update (or you)? When I install 9.2 on my thinkpad T40 I run the update during the installation (or right afterwards using "you") because there is a corrective patch for Radeon video drivers. If I don't - I will have problems like you. So this helps James
