[opensuse] Compac SR2050NX with Lightscribe DVD Drive
Will SuSE 10.x work with this DVD drive? I don't care about the text writing capabilities, I just want it to work like a normal DVD RW drive. I've googled this to death and the information returned is overwhelming with unrelated data to the point it is useless. Just an FYI: There is LightScribe support for Linux. There is both a stand-alone application and an SDK for adding labeling capability to applications. http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10803 http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadSection/linux/index.aspx?id=816 When I learned of this, I considered getting one of these drives for the system I was putting together at the time, but they're so much more expensive than non-LightScribe drives, I decided not to.

Jim, I also should have said "In general it will work in Linux without any troubles" in my previous post. Randall, A quick check at NewEgg and CompUSA shows the LightScribe drives are now in the $30 to $60 dollar range for decent hardware. Maybe $5 to $10 more than a non-LightScribe unit. I guess I based my decision on a bad example. As I recall, the one I saw at Fry's was over $100.

Last summer that was too true. Since then their prices have fallen very well indeed. Thanks for the info on the Linux LightScribe software. A major reason I hadn't bought one yet. My new excuse is the cost of the media. The LightScribe DVDs are now trending under $1 each in bulk so I am quickly running out of excuses not to get one. They have gone down a lot in price. And the software from lightscribe works quite nicely under 10.2. I picked up the samsung sh-182 and it works quite well. Burns a lot faster than the older ones I had. How is the label burning speed? Low-res versus medium-res versus high-res. Thanks, Stan -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Depends on how complicated your label is. The ones that do the entire disk take about 15 minutes or so. If it's just a label, only a couple of minutes at high-res settings. Tried low res and could barely read it. The lightscribe software for linux only has the simple labels, so they are pretty quick. What is the actual manufacturer & model number of the DVD drive? You gave us the Compaq system model number. There may be only one DVD burner in this particular model but usually there are several over the lifetime of a mass produced system like this. Details, details, details.
