My system at work is dual booted to SuSE 9.2 Professional and Windows XP. I was sharing the 2 desktop systems over a KVM until a week or so ago when I got a TFT monitor, and gave the KVM to someone else. The Keyboard and Mouse that came with this system are USB, but the old stuff was PS/2. I plugged in the new Monitor, Keyboard and mouse, booted up to SuSE, and everything came up perfectly. :-))))) Then, to test Windows XP, rebooted, the XP boot loader gave me the presentation for normal and safe modes. But, one I came up in the ctrl-alt-delete splash screen, neither the keyboard nor the mouse worked. Maybe the system is telling me not to use XP :-) -- Jerry Feldman <gaf@blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix user group http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9

I think that every time you select windoze from the grub menu it should have a popup that asks "Why are you doing this to me?" In my case it's because there are still games that don't run easily on linux. But hopefully that will continue to improve. Jeff

Not that I want to make our lives more complicated using M$ Software but doesn't XP have it's own boot loader on the order of the one that came with NT? I know that with NT you can, and it was recommended that you, use the NT boot loader to choose OS'.

I never used NT and I'm not aware of an XP boot loader, but I can honestly say that I've repeatedly had windoze installation disks ruin my existing Linux partitions so I would never trust a windoze boot loader. Jeff

Sorry Guys you can't to my knowledge boot a Linux partition with Winblows NT bootloader I have been trying for it for some persistent customers since XP came out, and Windows Support know less about XP than me.

No, windows bootloader wont boot any other os other than windows (98/me/2k/xp) and only comes with 2k/xp anyhow. Lilo/grub should dual-boot winxp/9.x fine

When I had the Multia a few years ago, I used the NT boot loader to boot Linux since the built-in console only knew about NT. Windows can also boot from Windows 9x. Years ago when I ran 9x at home, I had the Windows95 menu setup to boot Linux. In the case of Win9x, you are booting to DOS (even ME) then to Windows.
Lilo/grub should dual-boot winxp/9.x fine This is definitely preferred and much easier. -- Jerry Feldman <gaf@blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix user group http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9

I will try it with xp and suse9.1 pro, if I get it to work I will post a very mini how-to for those who are interested. But seriously for those who are interested it is a serious waste of time and you really don't want to that. Take the advice boot it with lilo or grub. Cheers for now.

With a valid Linux boot partition apparently the formula for NT and 2k is: /usr/sbin/rdev /boot/vmlinuz /dev/hd?? on /boot type ext? (rw) (note the result of /dev/hd??) dd if=/dev/hd?? of=bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1 (copies boot sector of linux to file) copy file to floppy Boot NT/2k shell to prompt attrib -s -r c:\boot.ini edit c:\boot.ini (plain text editor) and add to bottom of file: C:\BOOTSECT.LNX="Linux" Save and exit attrib +s +r c:\boot.ini reboot system and it ought to be a usable option. This assumes an untainted (non-MS :( ) MBR, so you might need an old boot\rescue floppy to fdisk /mbr if Lilo or Grub is located there.

Someone I know who's running (a pirate version of) XP and 9.1 upgraded to an USB keyboard. It worked fine until he started to trash what he thought was garbage in his XP, and lost his USB. I suggested that he try 9.1 instead, but he seems to have forgotten his password, and has gone out and replaced his USB keyboard and mouse with PS/2 jobs. I'll try and bring a copy of Knoppix the next time I see him, and see how that handles the USB hardware.

You can always reset your Linux password by booting into a rescue disk. There are a couple of ways (after booting the media): Mount the root file system of the installed system onto some free directory, say /mnt
-------------------------- chroot to that directory then change passwords using passwd. Example: $ mount /dev/hda1 /mnt $ chroot /mnt $ passwd Changing password for root. New password: ... ----------------- Another way is to simply edit /etc/shadow, and empty out the root password: root::12843:0:10000:::: -----^---< The password follows the first colon. Then unmount /mnt and boot the installed system. -- Jerry Feldman <gaf@blu.org> Boston Linux and Unix user group http://www.blu.org PGP key id:C5061EA9 PGP Key fingerprint:053C 73EC 3AC1 5C44 3E14 9245 FB00 3ED5 C506 1EA9
