It's been pointed out that more information is needed... I agree Java applets don't execute at all. They did at one point. The sites (internal) that have the applets I don't use often. Java applications still run fine -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I think one important thing missing is the location of installation. Was it from the Mozilla Build Service (the repository from the Community Repositories)? Ben -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Ben
Mozilla came from download.opensuse.org/repositories/mozilla/openSUSE_10.2/ Java from my regularly scheduled updates :) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Have you made any changes to either Java or Firefox since they did work together? Jim -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Oh, and you can force Firefox to find the Java plugin by putting a link in the firefox/plugins directory to ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so. Don't use the ns7-gcc29/ version. That is cheating on the RPM system but it should give you Java. I used to load Netscape and Java into non-SuSE locations and use that method. Since RPMs have become more available and more quickly available, I've been trusting them to keep me up to date, which they do. I would recommend loading both Firefox and Java through yast. That *should* sort out problems. Restart Firefox after re-installing. Good luck, Jim -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Jim, A most useful hint. The link that was present pointed to update8 and update13 is what is installed. I think there may be something wrong with the plugin itself. Starting firefox with debug gives me this when I try to load a java app in the browser: VM did not start up properly java_vm process: could not find Java VM symbols Could not read ack from child process Plugin: Java VM process has died. plugin: java process exited with status 3 Could not start JavaVM! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This did fix it. Seems the RPM missed the mark. Before this command, I got: # ls -lLa /etc/alternatives/javaplugin ls: cannot access /etc/alternatives/javaplugin: No such file or directory After the command, java works and /etc/alternatives/javaplugin points to /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun-1.5.0_update13-sr2/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so This is ok. I would have expected it pointed to 1.6. But I guess that is another issue. I installed 1.6 because early on eclipse wanted it. I have installed: java-1_6_0-sun-1.6.0.u3-0.5 java-1_5_0-sun-plugin-1.5.0_update13-0.5 java-1_5_0-sun-1.5.0_update13-0.5 BTW, I missed that this was a discussion for 10.2. I have been talking about 10.3. Still, it seems this is a problem for both releases. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O. Do regular java apps work (java itself, netbeans, eclipse)? I ask because a month or so ago a java update did not make correct links after installation. No java things worked. Correcting the links by hand fixed it. Then, a week or so ago a new java update came from suse. Seems the links are screwed up again. I am currently looking for the earlier post on this list that told about a program that sets the links. Because after I installed that update, my links seem to be messed up again. Sounds like you have a similar situation with a link pointing in the wrong place. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Kapellgränd 7 P.O.
