Hi there, I recall someone mentioning a website with info on installing Linux on laptops. Could someone please post that site once again? I'm interested in buying a Sony VAIO PCG-C1XD or VAIO B5 N505SN. If anyone has experience with one of these models I'd like to hear from you. Thanks! -- Yatsen Ng yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 98 or better." So I installed Linux... -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

You can find the Linux Laptop Volunteer Support Database at: http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/volunteer.html The most interesting link is at: http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/ There you'll find a lot of models with their own Linux experiences... the good ones and the bad ones too. You'll also find a link for a Laptop-Howto. I'm searching for a laptop too and I have been reading these stories for 1 month now, and many related links. I am sometimes convinced that IBM's Thinkpads is the best choice, the next day the Sony's are the best. The final result: I am totaly confused! Anyway, good luck. /NB ________________ Nicolas Beaulieu Economics Department, Universite Laval Centre de Recherches en Economie et Finances Appliquees (CREFA) Quebec, Canada 418-626-5033 _________________ http://www.penguinpowered.com/~montesquieu mailto:montesquieu@penguinpowered.com ICQ 15933500 _________________ -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

We purchased one of the 505 series-- I forget which one-- for my boss. This computer had *way* more than its share of problems. The hardware drivers for Windows 98 seemed to be flaky and just about all physical interfaces for perepherals are proprietary, so if you want to expand, you're pretty much stuck with upgrading with Sony parts, and they're very expensive. Printing to a directly attached LaserJet III was questionable at best, and I had to reinstall 'doze 3 times to get a fairly stable system. I finally decided this thing probably had some flaky hardware, and I found the worst part of the system-- Sony's tech support. It was literally impossible to contact them on the phone. We're a government agency and I'm used to waiting, at most, for 5-10 minutes to talk to tech support at Dell or Gateway. Their answering machine told me it would be a 2 1/2 hour wait. I support 120 clients and 4 servers and can't wait on the phone for that long. The end result-- the machine got shipped back from whence it came, and I'm in the process of trying to convince my boss to go for an Inspiron. Yeah, it's heavier, but it's got a 14" monitor with a *much* better picture, all the hardware works right, it's cheaper, and it comes with a 3-year warranty, as opposed to 1-year for the Sony. It also comes with Dell's tech support, which is second to none. Ah, well, I was checking out a Toshiba Portégé 3110CT and I like what I see so far. If anyone has personal experience with one of those i'd like to hear the story! -- Yatsen Ng yatsenng@casema.net It said "Needs Windows 98 or better."
